I have had a very frustrating experience trying to switch to Powergen. They have made a whole catalogue of errors (which I won't bore you with ;D). It is made even more frustrating when you can't understand the person on the other end of the line. It is not about being racist. It is a reasonable expectation that people who are employed to communicate with customers over the phone should be able to do exactly that.

After numerous phone calls and hassle the best they have come up with for me is a £10 credit to my account. >:(
  • Hi,

I'd like to tell you a wee story of my electricity supplier. Many moons ago when you had no choice I was with Scottish Hydro Electric. I then swapped to Amarada online account as soon as I could, thus saving myself an absolute packet of dosh. Then a year ago, PowerGen bought Amarada and we changed to their online account. Since then PowerGen have hiked their prices up at least three or four times. I got a letter through at the back end of last week and I now find it's going up again from the 29th November!! I am not a happy bunny and will be changing my supplier ASAP. I went online as it originally saved me money, I don't pay a SC (this was the last change in the price hike) and I pay monthly DD, so they get their money out of me regularly. So I don't know who told Martin that PowerGen weren't putting their prices up for Online accounts because they are. If I don't change soon I'll be paying Primary Rate =10.42p/kWh with a quarterly threshold of 200kWh then after that, Secondary Rate =8.39p/kWh (both prices include VAT)! Who can you believe these days?? I am very, very, VERY cross. >:( >:( >:(
  • Your current tariff must be a "hybrid" on line tariff, not the "energyonline" tariff.

They said at the time of the recent price increase that it would affect tariffs with no service charge (like yours), but wouldn't affect existing energy online customers (who do pay a standing charge) - and it hasn't.
  • Good news from Powergen for those who switched or applied to switch to their EnergyOnline tariff prior to 2nd November.  There will be no increase at the moment. So the recently announced increases will only apply to customers applying to switch to this tariff from November 2nd onwards. Martin's email today does not make it clear that any new applications will have to pay the increased tariff after all.  Here is the content of their confirmation email to me today.

"I can confirm that any customer who was already on, or had asked to switch to, our EnergyOnline Product prior to 2 November will not see any change in their prices at this time.

Whilst we can’t guarantee to maintain these prices indefinitely, we value your continued loyalty and will keep your prices down for as long as is practical.

    Kind regards,
    Dawn

  • I signed up through Energy Online to change electricity and gas to Powergen just before the new tariffs were announced. I'm pleased to say that I have now had a letter from Powergen confirming that I will be on the pre-increase tariff. However, I was expecting a discount of £43 per year, as mentioned in several other posts, but my letter states that discounts will be £10.50 Direct Debit Discount and £6.00 Multi Product Discount. That only makes £16.50! >:(
I emailed help@energyhelpline.com on Tuesday 9th November but got no reply. I tried to phone Powergen twice on their 0800 number but gave up after 15 minutes each time when there was no reply.
Also, the letter mentions the 1 Tesco point per £1 spent, but does not mention the 1000 points for signing up.

Has anyone else had a similar letter? Can anyone explain?
  • The £43 discount is made up of 3 different discounts:

    1) 2 x £10.50 discounts for paying by DD.

This is paid as a quarterly discount from the bill.

    2) 2 x £6 discounts for having dual fel from them

(Paid as an annual lump sum discount)

    3) £10 discount for signing up on line for account management, e-bills etc.

(They send you an e-mail regarding this during the switching preiod)

This discount also gets paid as an annual lump sum.
  • Thanks for that, but why am I only being given £16.50 discount? ???
  • Hi Street Farmer,

I have received a letter from Powergen dated 10th November.
    Paragraph 2 states the following:

“As you’ve registered your Tesco Clubcard you’ll earn 1,000 points for choosing energy from us and we’ll give you 1 point for every £1 you spend on your statement.  These will be shown on your Powergen statement and Tesco Clubcard statements”

Did you register your Tesco Clubcard when you applied online for Powergen’s Energy Online Dual Fuel tariff?
;)Do It To Them Before They Do It To You ;)
  • Hi Again SF,

Total Energy Online Duel Fuel Discount is £43.00, per annum.

I would suggest that you call Powergen’s CS on their free phone number:
    0800 – 056 6282
as it would appear that Powergen have got it wrong in your case.
;)Do It To Them Before They Do It To You ;)
  • why am I only being given £16.50 discount?

The £16.50 you refer to is actually per product - their letter doesn't make that clear!

(£10.50 each product for DD & £6 each product for dual fiel)

The other £10 discount for using on-line management only gets applied to your account after you have completed their website form for on-line management - which they will e-mail you about.
