Hi. I arranged online through the mse link to switch to Powergen and was a bit (!!) unhappy when I heard on the news last night that they were going to hike prices.

Soooo - I rang them up, and they confirmed that the price rises were only for certain accounts - the online account, the ageconcern account and another one (which I can't remember now!) were not affected and stay the same price - although the comparison site shows it HAS increased. Anyway, the lady I spoke to assured me that they hadn't changed and were fixed until July 2005.

She gave me the following prices for the online dual fuel:

    Gas:
    standing charge 11.496p per day
    unit rate 1.45p per unit

    Electricity:
    standing charge 8.98p per day
    unit rate 5.26p per unit

Minus discounts of £10.50 per utility held, = £21.00
    £12.00 for direct debit use
£10.00 for using the online accounting (or possibly the other way round on those two!)
making a discount of £43 per year.

Now I've got to work out if that is indeed cheaper than my current supplier, Scottish Power. ;D

I've only just started on this moneysaving lark.  I've just messed around with my savings accounts, and credit cards and think I am getting the hang of it.  However, I have just on the advice of MSE, switched from British Gas and Southern Electricity, to Powergen.  From this thread, it seems that I may have not done the right thing.  How do I find out how much I am paying right now from BGas, and SElectric, in comparison to how much I will pay with the price rise from Powergen.  I'm confused if the price rise will affect me as I did the switch last week and like others am in the 'cooling off' period.  Also, I switched using the link from MSE, getting the £10 cashback, but am confused at how I could have received the £40 Currys voucher, and Tesco points.

Will someone point me in the right direction please - I'm still learning!!

    Thanks,

    Claire

I'm in the same boat as you, but well glad I've found this website :)
I too have and still in the changeover period of moving over to Powergen from British Gas and Southern Electric and the way things are going, I won't be with them for much longer.
I am going to wait for the clubcard points and the freeview box to come and then I will have a look again.
What I have done so far is put my details in again at the comparison website http://www.energyhelpline.com/cashbackmse
to see where I stand. It now says that Scottich Power is the cheapest. ??? ???

All I know is that I'll give it a few weeks as what ever happens, I'm still saving money, not as much but still saving, and getting my clubcard points.

As for the Currys voucher, Going via Currys website and signing up to Powergen through them, you get a £40 voucher or a free freeview box as well as 1000 clubcard points but I think that this offer is now closed.

As Lawe says, the £40 Currys voucher offer is now over, but you couldn't have done both that and the £10 cashback you are getting via the MSE link - it was one or the other.

I switched to Powergen a week ago and am within the 14 day period to cancel.

Contacted them by phone because I had website problems in respect of DD. The confirmed my DD has been processed, told me the amount is £42 per month, instead of £52.50 with my previous supplier.

Additionally, they gave me a cast iron promise that the price of their online service is not increasing at the mo

Can't be any clearer and I can't be any happier, as the total saving is exactly as I was promised AND I've just missed out on my previous supplier's price rise!
    Waddle you do eh?
  • Thanks for your replies I feel better about things now. However, I have done another comparison on the website, and like Lawe, find that Scottish Power comes first, and Powergen is down the list. Last week, the site suggested I would save £104 ish per year, but today, Powergen is only saving me £72 a year. I'm not complaining, as I'd rather the £72 in my account of course, but does anyone know if there is a minimum amount of time I have to stay with Powergen before I can switch again?

    Cheers,
    Claire
  • Do you have to wait a certain period before you switch again? Can you not just change to a different provider that's cheaper?

You have to stay with a new supplier 30 days I think. I switched 3 months ago, still haven't had a bill from them & didn't get extra Tesco points :( I'd switch again but after all the hassel of leaving BG I don't think I can face it again so soon. will wait for my first bill & see wha tit looks like I think.

The only restriction is the amount of time it takes. Usually around 28 days but they usually quote you 4 - 6 weeks.

Lillibet, I think you might want to "modify" your last post...............lol
  • I've found Powergen's telephone customer service very unreliable when it comes to pricing as I found that quotes did not tally with the switching websites. In the end I got an email quote from Powergen which did tally. But I can't understand those posters who say that Energy Online is not affected by the price increase as I was quoted £522 before the price increase and now £576. ???
