Hi everyone - thanks Gingham for the new thread!:T
I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions of what to put in dishes to replace garlic other than mixed herbs. My DH goes mad if i so much as look at a clove of garlic and most dishes need a bit of something to give it flavor. I take odourless garlic capsules instead so I dont miss out on the health benefits!;)
Garlic is harshest when its been chopped. If you are roasting food, try adding a clove or two (not a bulb or two!) to the roasting dish. The garlic should be unpeeled. At the end of roasting it will have imparted a much milder, sweeter flavour than chopped garlic.
If the garlic clove is still whole and hasnt dried out you can even squeeze the sweet garlic paste into your gravy for a special treat.
Alternatively, start using ginger and coriander in your cooking.
Serve tomatoes with fresh basil leaves and a little salt. You can buy cheap pots of basil from most supermarkets for pennies and it will grow and grow if treated properly.
Oh, if you do keep a pot of basil there is one absolutely inflexible rule; when you water it NEVER water from the top of the pot it will rot. ALWAYS stand the basil in a saucer and apply water from the bottom.Keep trying.........................what else is there to do?

Hi everyone!
Oooo aren't physios nice? I can stand up straight again! I was worried I'd be all stoopy on Sunday:p
RS - scales are fickle things, I have learnt you should never weigh yourself everyday - here's what mine have told me this week:
last Wed - 10st 7.5
Tues - 10st 7
Wed - 10 st 8
Thurs - 10st 6.5
Fri (today)- 10 st 5.5
Considering the scientist type people say you need to consume 3500 calories LESS than normal to lose one pound in a week, that means I must have consumed 8750 kcals less in my daily diet since Wednesday - er... I don't think so:rotfl:Sometimes weighing and calorie counting aren't the most important things. You felt happy and slimmer, don't let the scales ruin that when tomorrow they could tell you something totally different. Weigh yourself once a week and lock the scales away in between - I've now asked my BF to take them to work in the car with him so I can't do a sneaky mid-week weigh.;) Chin up, draw a line under today and make Friday your new weigh in day starting next week.:D0 -
Hi All,
Well done on the weight losses Rockie, Mrs M, Frogga, Superspam, Kentish Maid and Pebbles. Hope I haven't left anyone out. Well done too to those who STS.
Sorry to hear you put a bit on RS but don't worry. Although I only weigh in once a week officially I actually climb on the scales at least once a day!. Last week after a weigh in of 11 stone 0 on the Friday, I dropped to 10st 13 on the Sunday and weighed 11st 3 on the Monday, despite not overeating or doing anything different. I was devastated but it did come off again eventually - though I ended up with a stay the same week that week. It will come off eventually. I thought mine would never shift but it is doing very gradually. I originally wanted to be around 9 and a half stone for my birthday but obviously have no where near managed it.
Thank you everyone for all the birthday greetings and good wishes, it was lovely to get them. My meals didn't really work out very well. My lunch out was cancelled as my friend had a workman arrive really late so I had a very healthy salad with a small piece of pizza and some greek yoghurt and fruit - so was very pleased with myself. I then did an 8 mile walk with my friend - after 2 shorter walks into town earlier in the day.
However, tea with DS was a disaster. I bought a reduced ready cooked chicken as I walked home -ready for a proper meal -and ended up eating most of the cripsy skin off it and a leg before he arrived!!. I cooked him a meal but didn't eat and then ended up going back to the supermarket to buy us both a treat - which was a packet of fruit pastilles, half a cream egg bar (shared) and a bottle of Coke!! Not the birthday meal I had planned. However, I still weigh 10st 12 this morning so no damage done.
We had a really long lie in this morning so I've only just had my lunch as breakfast wasn't till midday. I am going to a hog roast this evening as part of the 150 year celebrations at the primary school I used to teach at so will be eating late. It's quite cold here today so I thought if I went for a brisk half hour walk just before going I might warm up enough to last the evening.
B: Fruit and fibre with skimmed milk and raisins. Cranberry and raspberry juice.
L: Seedy wrap filled with homemade coleslaw, cucumber, tomato and chicken breast. BananaHog roast and whatever comes with it.

Just read your post and agree entirely Superspam. There is no way that I had eaten an extra 14,000 calories between my Sun and Mon weigh in that differed by 4lbs. As far as I remember I actually had only eaten around 1,300 so the scientists can't always be correct.Weight Loss Challenge 5/7/19 10st 6lbs

Froggy, you are doing such a great job and I really admire you for it.
I've overeaten lots of times but I've never 'binged' it's just not in my make up and I'm not even an amateur at it, if I fancy chocolate I'll make a special trip but it would just be chocolate and not huge quantities and that would sort me out.
I do totally respect that your battle is a different one to mine and has more levels than that tallest building in Dubai (was gonna say more layers than Lady Di's wedding dress but remembered your sig;) )
I don't get let of lightly though, have my own issues- like wishing my old man was stuck in dorset:rotfl:
I agree totally with Saversarn, both about the binging and about wishing my old man was stuck in Dorset!:rotfl:
RS - :grouphug: at SW the leader says there are 2 ways to lose weight - The motorway route and the scenic route and that both get there in the end just that one way takes longer!;)
only just had my lunch about an hour ago - very late for me but I've had a nice time visiting my friends and came away with a big bag full of clothes that my friends partner was giving away:T I had a toastie with HM bread and a small packet of crisps:o - was starving!
Think I'll have a jacket with cottage cheese and pineapple( - MRSM) nomnomnom:D for tea with some salad.
edited to say thanks for the advice re garlic CWP500:TDo what you love :happyhear0 -

Well here I am back again - thank you for all your kind words and very good advice, which I will take on board and move onwards and downwards (weightwise IYKWIM). I will change my weigh in day to Friday from now on and so won't get weighed in the morning tomorrow.
I haven't had anything since my blow out earlier (after I posted I finished off the digestives and had about 4 ginger nuts:o ) and I am going to just have some cottage cheese and apple for tea, but I will wait until I am hungry later on - right now I am still stuffed.
I went up to the hospital to get the cardiac monitor fitted earlier and I am getting bits of palpitations, but then I am in a major panic about it so that isn't helping at all. I read up about palpitations on the internet before and scared myself silly! I seem to get these palpitations worse when I have period pains and yesterday and today I have had whopping ones, even though I am not due until tomorrow (sorry if there are any men reading this!) so maybe it's a bit hormonal too as I think I have started the menopause.
Anyway - I have also decided that I am going to try and do what Frogga is doing and eat every couple of hours. I am terrible for going hours and hours without food and thinking I am doing the right thing, when really all I am doing is wrecking my hunger mechanisms even more. So tomorrow, whether or not I want to, I am going to have something every two hours - three meals and three snacks, and I will try and keep my portions reasonable too - that is my other downfall - HUGE portions. Am just going to amend my Sainsburys online shop to include some watercress and other nice salady things and some nice wholemeal bread, and some melon and other nice fruit and I will delete the ice cream and biscuits cos none of us in this house need them!
Thanks again for all your good advice - I feel much more positive about my eating now!
Mrs M - how lovely about your rings! I threw my wedding ring in the bin when OH left, but I still have my engagement ring and it is tiny - I would love to be able to get that on again!
Superspam - glad your back is feeling better.
Cheerfulness - still thinking about you and your son and glad things seem to be improving.

Hi all,
Back from sunny Glasgow, even though I know I didn't overdo it (stayed within calorie allowance every day) I still feel bloated because I had to rely too much on processed food rather than my usual home cooked loveliness :-)
Most days I had muesli with yoghurt and fruit for breakfast then ate an evening meal, first night was Wagamama saien soba, second was vegetable fajitas (very small portion) and last night was fish and chips which were absolutely delicious and still within my daily tally.
So today I am back on track but dreading WI tomorrow as I don't think I will have lost and may even have put on because I am retaining water because of the salt in everything.
.
B: Nothing, too busy getting to station etc
L: M & S mexican bean wrap and some strawberriesWholemeal spaghetti with quorn bolognese sauce and a side salad
Well done to all the losers and hugs for everyone else, haven't read all the posts yet X0 -
Hi all
I am back and sorry that I did not post while away, the internet space was at premium in the hostel where I was, in Barcelona, where it rained cats and dogs almost all the time I was there, while in London there was Barcelona weather (Sod's law at its best!).
I also didn't manage to read all the posts but scanned this page only very quickly because I have TONS of work to get through! But from now I shall be able to post here again on a regular basis! I am sure that TapLady sent you all my regards and eventually I shall be able to go back to the loads of pages I haven't read and catch up with all your news.
Well done all losers especially MrsM, fantastic achievement about fitting your engagement ring again, you must be so pleased!
I don't think I did too bad, in Spain there is a lot of good veg food to be had and I ate freely but not excessively.
I have probably put on some weight but here I am, back in the swing of things, and this what today looks like:
Breakfast: 1 oz porridge cooked in water, with toasted mixed nuts and seeds, 1 Activia fruit yogurt
Snack: 1 apple with smearing of peanut butter (less than 1 tsp)
Lunch: rice with dal and veg curry (cooked and eaten at a healthy eating cookery class, no more than 1 tsp oil among 11 people!), 1/2 cup strawberry smoothie made with soya milk.
Planned dinner: chick pea stew with potatoes and onions, boiled quinoa or rice, marigold stock, tomato and rocket salad with 1/2 tbsp olive oil, fruit and probably one more Activia yogurt .Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -

Been naughty sorry to say, my friend came down and brought down a donut each, i left told her my jaw is aching this morning so will leave it for just now. the girls then wanted to go to macdonalds i got one of those chicken wraps and a coffee came home and checked the calorie content ggrrrr 272 or something like that, she bought us all malteasers i managed to escape eating them.

When do I need to post my weigh in for the list?Grocery Challenge. £400. - £35.22 + £19.80 + £109.01 = £164.03
Other spends (Clothes Luxuries etc)£11.97 + £1.19 + £7.36 + £69.00 + £38.50 + £5.50 + £23.00 +£2.00 = £158.52:shocked::sad:0 -
Nix - :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
RS - glad you're feeling more positive! :DTry not to worry yourself with stuff you read on the internet. My problems started when I was 13 and weren't diagnosed until I was 18 (stoopid doctors thought I was having panic attacks!) - I searched up my symptoms on the internet and thought I had Wolf Parkinson White Syndrome or Long QT syndrome - for ages I was convinced I was going to pop my clogs any minute! Just remember its always the worst and most sensationalised information thats easiest to find;) Stress makes our problem worse - so deep breath, you resting on a sunny beach with the waves lapping at your toes......
I have been a bit naughty and ate a big wedge of madeira cake while I was making the coconut and mango trifles for tomorrows dinnerI must be getting rid of my tolerance for sweet food because it made me feel a bit sick. That probably had something to do with the palm full of chocolate chips I ate too though:o (there were a few left in the packet as I searched through the cupboard for cornflour and they just sort of jumped into my mouth!)
oops!0
