Goitrogens are foods that reduce the uptake of iodine by the thyroid and so should be eaten in moderation: Cabbage, cauli, sprouts, soya, maize and many types of nut
OK call me Mrs Thickie but I'm a bit muddled by that  I don't know what the Thyroid thing is but if it's bad I don't want it! But I eat all of those things everyday so am I gonna get it?

I have to eat nuts for me protien, cabbage I eat everyday and cauli most days, and soya everyday.

I read a thing the other day that said people aren't eating enough soya. Cant remember how much you're supposed to eat but it's good for something and prevents you getting something too. You can see I paid alot of attention  Might have been about Ladies troubles, or Dementure. I forget.

But I know I thought "oh that's good cos I eat that, but now I don't want to catch a Thyroid

I was wondering - does anyone have a nice hm coleslaw recipe? I am getting through loads of the waitrose supreme coleslaw and it's expensive! But it's the nicest supermarket one I've found so don't like buying cheaper versions elsewhere.

With summer nearly here I need to get organised with the salady stuff!

Can be quite flexible with hm coleslaw and make it as you like it. I shred cabbage and grate carrot. Then I add something oniony, might be chives, spring onions or real onion. Little pieces. Dressing... I usually use very low Hellmans mayo, but sometimes a little French dressing or caesar mixed in makes it a bit less sticky. But the time you've left it a few minutes it starts to get a bit wetter, Some folks use apple, raisins etc, but those aren't to our taste. (Maybe I should just come out and say it....Yukky!)

Thanks for the reminder, I have a half dead cabbage.

i think thyroid is a gland. the problem is when you have overactive or underative thyroid gland (i have people in my family with both, which bodes well  ) as it produces too much or not enough of whatever stuff it produces so it causes you problems, which can include:
    difficulty breathing,
    hyperactivity,
    mood swings, irritability, and nervousness,
    difficulty sleeping,
    fatigue (extreme tiredness),
    muscle weakness,
needing to pass stools (faeces), or urine, frequently,
diarrhoea or streatorrhoea (excess fat in your stools),
sensitivity to heat and excess sweating,
    increased appetite,
    sudden weight loss or gain,
very infrequent, or light periods, or periods stopping altogether,
    infertility, and
    loss of interest in sex.

    muscle weakness and cramps,
    a hoarse voice or cry,
    a slow heart rate,
    dry flaky skin, and
    weight gain.

This is all copy and pasted from nhs direct (my mecca ;) ) The top list is over, and bottom bit is under. i don't think you can catch it, i remember from when i was pregnant that it often runs in families.
i'm not sure if the iodine thing was just something people with thyroid problems should be aware of or if it was relevant to all - perhaps the lovely mrsm could tell us? :D

    Morning all

Fraid you folks know as much as me ...more probably :p ... thats why i typed exactly what the reply was from the magazine for Rose. I assume that its only relevant if you have problems with your thyroid in the 1st place.. so NO frogga i don't imagine you can catch it my ickle green friend :rotfl:

Well i have just got back from a 2hr toddle to the supermarket and garden centre..went out at 7:45 so i didn't get stuck in the full heat.. its allready 25 here.. indoors in the shade  ....
It was lovely as i tripped off out in my 3/4 trousers and a top with 3/4 sleeves, my sunglasses... no coat/jacket :j it was so nice..and i didn'y have to keep utching my trousers up or pulling my top down :D ..so im a happy bunny...
I have noticed that over this last week my stomach is flatter -so im guessing its the extra fruit and stuff i have been eating.... i have only had 1 slice of bread since friday i reckon and that was HM super seedy stuff.. and i think that it what tends to make me hold water... friday will be the big test mind..pinkies crossed;)

hubby is away now until tomorrow evening playing hockey with the army so i only have myself to suit ..all the laundry is done.. i need to do no cooking...ooooohhhh yes .....so apart from plodding in the garden i don't know what im going to do  but i will cope :D

    Meals today -
    • brekkie -melon, pineapple, kiwi and apple juice nomnomnom and think i will have a few strawberries and grapes in a moment
    • lunch-im having a chicken portion from yesterdays roast with kraut salat
    • dinner -home boiled ham with salad
    • inbetweenies -fruit or yogurt
Picked up some grapefruits this morning -so i can do pineapple n grapefruit juice for brekkie in the morning..one of my faves :T

ooh folks don't know if i posted late yesterday...but just in case i didn't.. i have pea pods on my pea plants :j ...how happy am i :D

JoJoB.. when i make coleslaw - i do shredded cabage and onion, grated carrot and then i mix greek yogurt and a bit of mayonnaise with seasoning and sometimes a squirt of lemon juice and mix then leave to stand in the fridge for a while... its lovely... its also nice to use red cabbage and onions too

Well i got revenge on hubby yesterday... we had some sour lemon n cola sweets (thats are rather nice).. imagine the lemon opal fruit but with a sour coating mmmmm... anyway i told hubby i was fine with them and could ignore them as long as they weren't open..well when he went away i found the bag on my side of the bed  , so i ignored them.. then when we went out yesterday i put them in the drivers door pocket -open and hubby couldn't leave them alone :rotfl: and i didn't have one -on Principal ;) ... he did confess he had done it on purpose... but only because he knew how focussed i was and that i wouldn't touch them... then appologised for being mean.... mind i found it funny as I KNEW i wouldn't eat them ...but he did -well half..then passed them for me to put on my side of the car so he couldn't get them :rotfl:

Well I guess i should go and get some more bits done in the garden..have more peas so plant out... hey only took about 5 days and they are about 3" tall :T and i want to set some more salad leaves.. this time in modules to leave to become whole heads rather than cut n come again :D

    right...have a great day everyone...keep at it :T

Well. I have now decided that we all eat too much in our house. So I have cut portion sizes-dramatically as I now only cook what we will actually eat for that meal and if I have made more, I squirrel it away before the family think there may be leftovers. It's a great compliment to my cooking when they want more, but ever expanding waistlines is not helpful. In order to make it easier for my DD we have all cut down-so hopefully we will all benefit. No one complains they are hungry and similarly no one complains they can't move after they have eaten-before I made the portions smaller we all used to be stuffed. I need to lose weight. I put some weight on when I stopped smoking. (I stopped at beginning of december 07 and seem to at more-I used to have a cig instead of food, but now I have food) I tried on 3 of my pairs of jeans the other day and could not get into any of them-I was not a happy bunny!!!
Anyway enough of my ranting and mad ramblings!!!
Well done everyone. This thread is an inspiration.

    Hi all,

Thanks toniwoty for keeping tally. I maintained so far ;) That was the goal but have decided I want to lose a little more so I'm an actual size rather than an inbetween sizes (depending on whether they are generously cut or not ;))

Went away for the weekend, ate out for lunch on Saturday in Pret -expensive but yum and very healthy. Ate quiet a lot at a bbq and so had toast for tea when we got home after the drive.

Haven't been good today though. Need my bum kicked back into gear I think :o

Have managed to buy 2 skirts on ebay, a new skirt from charity shop and two brand new pairs of jeans (from DotP) over the last few days - so now I positively can't put any more weight back on again :p

    Morning folks :hello:

Thyroid - the information as MrsM says is only if you have a thyroid problem. You can't catch it, it's a gland that everyone has but it can go a bit wonky and cause problems. I've only got half of one cos I had the other half taken out so I've got the tshirt on thyroid problems!! All sorted now though, I can't blame it for my weight probs any more!! :D

OH got home at 11pm last night, then proceeded to talk my socks off for an hour  so I'm really tired this morning.

Boiled eggs and soldiers for brekkie. Leftover SW quiche with a tiny spud and huge salad for lunch, loads of fruit then bubble and squeak when I eventually get home tonight :wall: Manchester is heaving with footie supporters already  so I don't think it's going to make any difference what time I try to get home

    See you later folks:A
