I agree about the comfort eating by the way. Last night's dinner was a pasta fest, not the healthiest, but I don't tend to snack after dinner. It's work that has me grazing all day!!

Hey teaspoon how did you get deleted??

Anyway not a good day for me today, DH's birthday so out for lunch and heading out for dinner. To say nothing of coc*tail hour this pm. and no gym. Back on the wagon tomorrow! What about you tara?
  • Can I join in.

Im so depressed - My weight has always been a disaster up, down, round etc.

I lost all my excess weight about 2 years ago. But I have a massive self destruct button, so looking lush I met a guy (a nearly year ago) now I am 2 stone heavier - 2 stone in a year!!

I desperately want to lose weight. Its our anniversary on dec 5th and I would love to be closer to the size and weight I was when we met.

So at 13st that would make my aim 11st.

How many pounds does everyone aim for or lose each week??
I lose weight and then comfort eat and can put 10lb on in a week - no kidding.

If I lose 3lb a week I could lose 1st 1/2 by our anniversary and the other 7lb by xmas.
  • Hi LMC and welcome!

I guess what I would say (although believe me I'm not in much of a position to give advice re weight loss) is not to get to fixated on how much per week etc. At the minute I'm mostly trying to get some exercise and eat food that's good for me. I'm not getting enough exercise and I'm eating a bit too much of the food that's good for me  but that's another matter. Seriously though I'm a believer in looking at the whole picture, not just the weight. For me gaining weight has involved drinking too much which in the main has been a sort of a sociable thing, and eating too many sweet things. So I have decided that I'm not drinking during the week (I say nursing a hangover :o but it was DH's birthday yesterday) and I have totally stopped eating chocolate. More than that though I'm trying to eat lots of wholegrain and fruit and veg etc. And you know I like how I feel when I eat properly and exercise. I think eating badly and not getting enough exercise really contributes to feeling low and depressed which then makes you comfort eat.

So I guess for me it's about focusing on what I do want. I want to feel fitter, walk faster. I want to take some weight off my poor overstrained knees and ankles which get sore when I get heavier. I want to feel comfortable after I eat rather than bloated.

I know it's facile to say it's about a lifestyle change but really to me it's about caring for yourself. Nourishing yourself. Would you give your car water instead of petrol? Would you think you could let it lie unused for months and then expect it to start first time? Try to apply those principles to yourself.

I can tell you that within a few weeks of eating properly you are really really glad you're doing it!

So to sum up, don't beat yourself up, what's done is done, no point in lamenting it. Crash dieting won't solve anything, you'll still be on the same merry go round you're already on. Try to break that circuit....

Lots of luck and you're very welcome here....hopefully we can try to move forward together. I would love to be a stone down by Christmas, I think this is achieveable if I keep doing what I'm doing...though time will tell!
  • thank you for your kind words.

I had a mega argument with my boyfreind last night - he came home to find i had pizza for dinner. Clearly my diet didnt start.

Anyway he hit with a few home truths which hurt but he really wasnt doing it to be unkind. So this morning I got motivated and called a low calorie diet group and am going to meet the counsellor tonight.
    *fingers crossed*

    Hello all

I've been at home with the flu for a couple of days, just back to work today and still feeling rotten. I ate lots and got no exercise, boo. But today is a new day and I am having a restful alcohol-free weekend to get ovet the flu and get back on track. I bought some apples and strawberries at lunchtime and they will keep me going for a while. I have also stocked up on more oatcakes and reduced-sugar peanut butter. I am so determined to do this! Focusing on the healthy stuff that I like and making sure that I always have some in case I'm hungry etc. And I will try to get some exercise in over the weekend. Promise!

Welcome lilmissclass! It's great here. I can't really add any more to what belfastgirl23 said, she really summed it up well. One question. Do you enjoy cooking and are you inventive with vegetables, pulses, grains etc? I am lucky in that I love cooking, and I am really trying at the moment to incorporate as many veg into dinners as possible. Being able to cook is half the battle when it comes to healthy eating! Anyway, looking forward to hearing more about you.

p.s. I am a bit of a sugar addict, it is the enemy! I am desperately trying to stay away from the office chocolate tin at the moment, help...

  • Hi Tara,

Thanks for the welcome. Im useless at cooking - infact, god I have never cooked in my life - Well thats a lie I can cook bacon. :P

Everything else is from a tin/microwave or takeaway. As for vegetables - last night I ordered them on my pizza...

Today has been a good start - Had soup and then walked the dog. my dog is a lot like me - she would like to eat and sleep all day. So she had a major shock when we got ready for a walk - pedometer on and everthing.

5 mins in she developed a limp and looked up to see if it would work. She got told to knock it on the head and did, though she wasnt impressed.

So 1 hr later we had walked to and back to city hall, almost 5000 steps for me (though I think its 10,000 for her lol)

So - no takeaway for me tonight. the walk felt great though.
  • Well done you guys!

Not so good here, we are still sort of celebrating the birthday - which is fun but not very diet friendly. Went out for dinner to the Lebanese restaurant down by the BBC in Belfast - lovely but everything drowned in oil - and the guy recommended one of the desserts and I had to have it (little nut pastry things, v sweet but yummy). Only saving grace is that they don't serve wine and it was raining too hard to make it appealing to go and buy some.

lilmissclass you gotta learn to cook! It's not so hard. See this link for a great and foolproof tuscan bean stew recipehttp://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=813339&highlight=Tuscan+bean

It's the second post down. Sorry the italics won't go off now, no idea why :) It really is easy, you can just use tinned beans etc. And it is low fat and reasonably low cal for something so filling.

Oh and I didn't go to the gym :(

    Ah well...

PS Tara hope you feel better soon...have been dosing with vit C myself and fleeing the room at the first sign of anyone coughing or sneezing :)
  • Hey guys are you hiding out a bit too?

I had a very bad weekend, we ate out for almost every meal and I topped it off with an almond croissant yesterday. But I am back on the wagon with a bang - I had stomach ache last night because I had a very cheesy lunch (in both sense of the word :) ) and I have been eating v little cheese lately.

Made it to the gym this morning and have a nice sensible bruschetta awaiting me for lunch and tuscan bean stew made for tea (it's always nicer on the second day!) And I'm going to get a quick walk in at lunchtime.

I will weigh in tomorrow but I'm not expecting good news, will be v grateful if I've maintained or only put on a little bit :)

How's the cold tara? And sorry LMC if I put you off by going on about cooking!
