How many BS accounts (for Carpetbagging) do you have?

Options
Out of curiosity (& if you can be bothered responding & don't mind divulging) how many BS accounts do you have? Anyone got the full set?

A quick look at the pdf on the BSA website tells me there are 59 left & I currently have 14 of them (all in the "top 20").

Am considering dusting off my carpetbagging boots & filling in the gaps in the top 20 if possible. Although since only Nationwide (IMO) is big enough to float independently, maybe the tiddlers are better bets? Views on that?

Those darned passbooks are addicitive.

Final O/T point - does anyone here know what "The Broom Cupboard" was?

cheers
Fella

I only have the Chelsea and Britannia, I don't see much chance of Chelsea converting even though the savers voted massively in favour a few years ago! :)

Derbyshire are quoted as saying that whilst they plan to remain an independent BS, they would listen to any offers.;)

Better if they was bought when in best of wealth rather than as a bale out. ;)

Found a discussion on Derbyshire BS from 14 months ago.

Think you mean that you only have an account with every Building Society both Nation wide and Country Wide.

Actually the Broom Cupboard was a tiny branch of the Stroud & Swindon BS in Holborn, much beloved by the regulars on Carpetbagger.com before it morphed & became rpoints.

I think some of the members on here are being a little coy about their membership tally, which is fair enuff :)

My own view is that all Building Societies will go eventually. I reckon 90% or more will be gone within 20 years. No BS membership has ever voted against a flotation/takeover proposal & I doubt they ever will.

I'm also reasonably confident that the signaway will never ever be enforced in any float/takeover situation. BSs only convert when they want to convert & in those circumstances they are most unlikely to guarantee votes against by denying windfalls to a subset of members.

Apart from members of Leek United Building Society. Don't ask me why but I voted against.

I have 4 left now just had the Portman convert to Nationwide, have struck lucky with mine as I wasn't looking to be a carpetbagger for shares etc just got accounts when they were offering the best savings deals and managed to avoid the sign overs although I started saving in the early 90's.

I know I have Chelsea, Nationwide, Yorkshire and Darlington I can't think of any more off the top of my head.

Struck lucky with Halifax, Northern Rock, Portman, Bradford and Bingley to name but a few.

I've got 32 out of the 59 remaining. The most recent one I snapped up was the Scottish BS (1 Year Thistle Bond, 6.65%, min £1k). Most of the ones I have acquired have been due to regular savers with above average rates (6.50% and above). The 'opportunity cost' to get any more makes chasing others a no no in my case as the money would be better served earning interest elsewhere.
