Over in the Health Moneysaving Forum there is a post about prescriptions
Prescription Charges Annual Certificate - worth a read.
Do ask at your surgery what you are entitled to in terms of foods on prescription and then you can make an informed choice regarding the cost vs annual certificate.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Chinese supermarkets are a good place to buy rice noodles, and they aren't expensive, you can buy both thin vermicelli-type noodles as well as wider fettucine-style ones. (Though I'm not sure how they would taste with Italian sauces!) You can also buy these from supermarkets (in the ethnic section) but they tend to be more expensive.

Bit of marmite (or equivalent) mixed with a bit of hot water is very good for giving flavour and a bit of colour to soya mince. Add as much or little according to taste!Official DFW Nerd no. 082! :cool:Debt @ 01/01/2014 £16,956 Debt now: £0.00 :j

Hi Everyone.
I've bought a bag of dried soya mince ('cos it's cheap and apparantly good for you?), how do I prepare it and what can I make with it? Bolognaise, Chillie??
Some ideas / instructions would be great!
Thanks in advance!0 -
Mix it with water as directed. 100gs makes enough for 2. Then I fry chopped carrots, onions and if I have it celery. Then add garlic to taste and fry for another minute. Add the soaked mince, a tin of tomatoes, what herbs you like and two bovril cubes. Simmer for as long as possible but minimum of half an hour.
To this I add chilli and beans for chilli, or use it as is for bolognese, lasagne or shepherds pie.
It is very good for you with more protein that meat.0 -
Hubby soaks it in gravy overnight to get rid of that soy taste, then fries it up with onion & garlic and we have it with tatties and peasThe stupid things you do, you regret... if you have any sense, and if you don't regret them, maybe you're stupid. - Katharine Hepburn0

Soya mince can be prepared as above for viggie dishes, or you can add it to meat dishes to make it go further. We often add it to beef chilli's, bolognase, and curry's. Very cheap, and tastes ok, as the dish still has meat in it to give it flavour.
I just fry onions, garlic, meat etc as usual. Add tomatoes, herbs/spices, etc depending on what dish you are cooking. Then just add the dry soya mince to the dish to simmer as usual. It will take on the flavour of the dish you are cooking, and is so easy as this way it does not need preparing at all. What's he building in there???

Thanks for all the replies guys! I've got a big pan of Soya Mince Bolognaise simmering away on the cooker now! Just having a glass of red wine waiting for it to cook!
One further question, I've made WAY too much (as usual!!) is it okay to freeze the bolognaise sauce?
Thanks.;)0 -
Yes, it's fine!
If you can spare any wine, chuck a half glass in the pan, it'll taste even better!0 -
