Not sure what size bag you have bought  I know the bags I get from Sainsbury's (50 something p ) when reconstitued are meant to be the equivalent of 800g of mince. So, half a bag = 400g which I would use to make a bolognaise sauce with 1 tinned tomatoes, onions etc and it makes four generous portions.

  • Thanks, Queenie - I used about 1/4 of the bag and a mini tin of tomatoes, and it made a wonderful sauce. I'm a convert :)

which one did you get wigginsmum?

I used to use the sains one, but Ive found one called "savoury mince" in holland & barrett. INstead of heating it with water in a pan, now i just put some in a bown and pour some boiling water over it. Add a bit more water if it looks like it needs it

I cant rate this enough, it so cheap and tastes well nice :D
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

It was the Sainsbury dried soya mince 200g. I put it in a bowl with some Bisto Best onion gravy granules and boiling water, then added it to tinned toms, onion, garlic, tomato puree, and various herbs. It was yummy! I was worried it would have a strange tang to it but it was fine.

  • Hi - also bought the savoury mince in H&B - my first time with soya mince. Made a pistatsio with it and it was great though I did end up putting a stock cube and a blob of marmite in it to make it taste of something. Not too sure if this is good on the salt levels. My OH insists on meat for his dinner. I got it in the oven before he got home and he didn't bat an eyelid - just complained he was too full up when he finished! I managed to con him :rotfl: A veggie friend here at work recommends the frozen one called Realeat, so I am trying that next week. She says it has much more flavour.

Oh - and to answer the original question I used 50g for two of us. This reconstitutes to 200g which is about what I would use in meat mince.

I had some sauce reheated the next day and it was awful, so I'll only use as much as we can eat fresh in the future.

  • Hi all,

I've been lurking on this forum for the last week or two and have been very impressed by everything i've been learning about cooking 'old style'.

So I went to Sainsbury’s this morning (it's on my way to work - I walk) and I got some country soup mix, to use tomorrow night and I also bought some dried Soya mince. The 200g bag apparently when rehydrated yields 800g, so 52p for 800g of an ingredient I can use instead of mince seems very good value.

So my question is... Do you have any tips for using this product? I was just gonna make it into a bolognaise sauce and then take it from there.

    Thanks
