thanks op i had been thinking about bulking out my mince since it keeps going up in now price and my local asda has stopped doing its knock downs at the end of the day now so no longer able to pick up a mince for 40p - £1 for 500g
think they caught on we were waiting and buying them all up in the evenings.
so going try some out and see if i can get my 500g mice now to last 2 meals instead of one buy using soya.Still TryingGrocery challenge July 2016

I always buy Tesco frozen soya mince as I don't like the dried sort. It's more expensive but tastes better.0

Hi all
Just wondering if someone could help me bought some of the above from sainsburys and all it tells me to do is add boiling water to it for a minute??
So... if I was wanting to make say a chilli with it......Do I need to fry it or anything first or do I just add it to the onions, garlic, tomatoes etc and simmer for a while?
Not much of a Delia so sorry if it's a stupid question!!
I have had it years ago..........but can't remember!!! Just hoping to get the best taste / texture result possible with it.
Cheers0 -
Hi there
When I use it I just add the boiling water for 1 min to rehydrate and then add to the toms etc to simmer. I don't fry it.
Good Luck

For chilli about 5 mins before it is ready add the tvp. It absorbs a good bit of water too.
Just to add - I've never fried it and not sure if it is a good idea.0 -
You'll need to add quite a bit of flavourings if you intend to use the mince in vegi recipies, stock such as Kallo or Marigold or a good HM one will do plus onions and veg to taste. The mince is tasteless in itself so you have to give it ome woomf.
I use quite a bit of it but to extend mince in chilli and spag bol etc. (OH doesn't like the oats method - savory porridge!!) I add it to the mince when I have finished the frying off stage so that it absorbs some of the juices but the same would apply to veges if you don't eat meat.0 -
I always find a teaspoon of marmite gives it a better flavour.I always stir it in the boiling water and let it stand while the mince softens so it takes the flavour in.I have to laugh at my husband (who won't even sit at the table when I'm eating marmite because he finds it so disgusting) when he tells me my mince is always so tasty. If only he knew.0

Thank you all so much for your replies & advice. :T
I will be making it tomorrow - so I thought I would ask tonight in case it took a while to get a reply.....I was wrong!! - I forgot how helpful other Mser's are. :A

I second the Marmite thing..Bovril also works.
I tend to just chuck it in with the liquid (eg with the tinned toms for a chilli or bolognese) and simmer it. Works great in lasagne too..have fed it to committed carnivores before and they've not noticed!
