I just checked my jar and Marmite's approved by the Vegetarian Society :D

It's just yeast extract and stuff.

    Bovril is meaty though presumably!

  • Marmite is vegetarian, it's just yeast extract and a good source of B vitamins.Bovril is beef extract though.

Thanks for clarifying about the Marmite, I had thought Marmite was meaty but that Vegemite was the veggie alternative.

    Hello!

This is how I deal with soya mince; I crumble a veggie stock cube in with the mince, add salt and pepper and then cover it with boiling water. I then stir in a good teaspoon of marmite as well, and leave it to stand until I need it. If I'm making, for example, chilli, I'll fry the onion, then add the mince and stir it around to coat as much of it as possible with the onion and oil. Then I add the other wet ingredients eg. tinned toms, the kidney beans with their juice and maybe a goodly slosh of red wine. Then I let it boil down slowly, so all the flavours get into the mince and when I serve it the sauce is rich and thick.

    Hope this helps!

I eat Marmite everyday, it's a great source of vitamin B12. Unfortunately it's the most repulsive food ever thought of. :(

As for the TVP mince, I've never been able to cook it satisfactorily, so I'll be following this post carefully!

If its any help, I use soya mince for shepherds pie - I fry some onion in the bottom of the saucepan, add some sliced carrot and some peas, bung in the soya mince and a veggie Oxo dissolved in boiling water, plus a spoonful of HM green tomato chutney. Cook it up for 5 mins or so, put into shepherds pie tin, top with mash and a little parmesan over the top, and cook as normal.
    Mr LW loves it.:D

You sometimes get big bags of soya chunks (I once used these to feed an american harcore punk band who were all vegans - they thought it was hilarious a food was called chunks) and soya mince in the ethnic food bit of supermakets, really cheaply too, some south Indian people seem to love them.

I cooked up half a pound of soya mince, with onion, pepper, half a tin of toms, mushroom, some diced peppers, an inch of red wine, an oxo a splash of water, and some Italian seasoning.
Just an average spag bol type recipe.
    It tasted..............disgusting.
It's the soya mince, it's horrible, no texture to it. So now I have this big pot of bosh that'l probably end up as the dog's dinner.
    Oh dear me.

  • Could you add some 'real' cooked mince to it and hope that will disguise the texture?
