The increases do seem to be similar what other supplier upped their prices by.

The problem if the prices drop next year as seems to be likely, you get tied into a years contract with staywarm and ours starts/stops in November.

I questioned them about the 12 month contract when I started with them in September and was told that I am not tied to 12 months I could give 30 days notice any time I wanted. I explained to them that my son who currently works away may be coming back home sometime in the near future, and if the price increased more than I was happy to pay because of the extra person in the house, what would happen, and they said I could give 30 days notice. Which is what I will do anyway if the general prices come down in the spring or summer.
  • djohn2002uk - all my data is recorded on spreadsheets. I will give a posting with my savings following my last payments for the year, hopefully by about the middle of January.

  • Referring to my previous posting the gas and electricity bills from British Gas arrived earlier than I had anticipated so I have now been able to calculate the savings that we have made.

We opted for British Gas 'Click 4' tarriff and have been supplied with electricity from 10th January and gas from 14th January so there is a few more days to go before the full year of supply is up, I have made an estimated allowance for the energy that will be used from the last readings used in the bills up to these dates.

In 2007 our payments to StayWarm amounted to £1,301.04, the energy that they said that we had used was 4618 kWh of electricity and 24,468 kWh of gas.

The energy that we have used during 2008, including the above estimated allowance is marginally less than for 2007 at 4430 kWh of electricity and 23,072 kWh of gas.

The payments that we have made to BG plus that estimated allowance are £1,277.85 (equal to £507.88 for electricity and £769.97 for gas) so that we have made a saving of £23.19 against StayWarm's charges for 2007.

I have estimated that the monthly payment of £113.41 that we were paying for 8 months of 2007 (we paid £98.44 for the first 4 months) would have been increased by 30% to £147.43 per month so that we would have paid a total of £1,633.08 (equal to 4 x £113.41 + 8 x £147.43) if we had stayed with StayWarm. Using these estimated charges then we have saved £355.23 by changing supplier.

Well done Alan, you must be chuffed as I was. Your savings are broadly in line with mine bearing in mind the difference in prices over the past year compared to what they were about 3 yrs ago.

I have just checked my Staywarm renewal price on the comparison sites.

The savings they offer are are minus figures so it's Staywarm for me again next year.

I got the winter fuel payment yesterday, £250, so that will pay a quarter of it.
  • I've had two telephone conversations with Staywarm since I received my new review for the coming 12 months.

£20 per month increase from £57 to £77!!!

When I pointed out that ALL of their own other tariffs would work out at the same monthly cost per month as I have BEEN paying for Staywarm for the past year, I got "Well, if you want to change then, I'll do it for you now"

When asked what prices the Staywarm charges were based on I might as well have asked for the entrance code for the GCHQ Communications Intelligence building!!

OK, so it's based on size and type of property, number of occupants, etc... but neither of the two individuals I spoke to could tell me, (after E-ON/Staywarm worked out some mathematical "score system" on those details), what price they "times" it by

They kept insisting that no price was used - Yeah, sure, like I'm that gullible :rotfl:
  • Stupid question is 23000 kwh gas the same as 23000 kwh electricity ?

I tried again by email to get this information. This is the condescending and frankly insulting reply I got...

"Good Morning and thank you for your email.
We do not provide this information as the pricing structure is so diverse. The prices differ, depending on the area you live in; the number of bedrooms at your property; the number of occupants and your property and your annual gas/electricity usage.
I can confirm your price is correct for your particular circumstances.
I trust this is to your satisfaction."

They know the area I live in, the number of bedrooms at my property, the number of occupants in my property and my annual gas/electricity usage, so why can't they tell me the calculations on that basis? They obviously think that their (older) customers haven't a brain in their heads and wouldn't understand the system! How dare they!!!
  • I was under the impression that from about September 2006 StayWarm's charges were no longer dependant upon the number of bedreooms but were related to actual usage. If that is the case why do StayWarm refer to the number of bedrooms in their email?
