Nice natural smelling rooms for potential buyers....

Options
I was going to post this in the Housing bit but I thought I would get better/OS tips off you clever lot.

We are putting our flat on the market in a couple of weeks, spent 5 hours today clearing out the loft, and I am going to spend the rest of this week, doing each room, getting rid of clutter and giving it a good old clean, windows, window frames, skirting boards etc....

What tips would you have for making the rooms smell really fresh and lovely for potential viewings. I don't like air fresheners, want a nice natural smell. I can't open the windows wide as I am on a first floor and cat tries to get out, she doesn't smell, but I can't get that lovely fresh air coming in very much!

Any tips at all would be greatly appreciated that I could do just before a viewing takes place would be great as well!

xx

  • I hate air freseners too, find them quite suffocating. could you close the puddy cat out of certain rooms on a rotational basis so you could have a window open to air them?

I love the smell of furniture polish, always makes me think "Clean" ... I once read a tip which said if you don't have time to clean just spray some polish in the room to make it smell like its been cleaned :D

I quite like the smell of fresh washing too, obviously don't have it hanging around when peeps come for viewings though :D

edit - hey - I'm posing in OS!! sorry, you may as well have posted in the arms though if you wanted replys off the likes of me  :rotfl:

Ann Maurice (House Doctor) recommends bowls of Pot Pourri (the good stuff) for the Living Room/Lounge area and a bowl of lemons for the kitchen. I'm pretty sure that modern house buyers are completely aware of the old 'home baking'/'fresh brewed coffee'/'home made bread' trick.

Yankee Candles are good too :D .

We are cat lovers as well - please don't leave a litter tray around anywhere  - that would be most off-putting!

Although not a fan of air fresheners, when we went to look round some new houses they used apple smelling plug in airfresheners in hallway (nice as you went in), sitting room and main bedroom. Overall it wasn't overpowering just pleasant, perhaps you could do something similar but only plug them in an hour or two before viewings

I'm in the same posish as we have just finished the decorating in preparation for the new carpets etc. etc. before putting the house on the market at the end of February.

Wow, I thought, I'll buy some Jo Malone scented candles eek - £38 each. So posted a thread and bought a yankee candle smelling of fresh washing.

I think I'll do the bowl of apples and lemons, plus flowers. I think one thing is not to make smells by cooking strong smelling food. I once went to look round a house and they had made no effort to make their house nice. They were cooking something smelly and their teenage son had a mate in his room and they were playing loud music ... they also had a massive dog, it really put me off the place.

If you go to About.com they have a section on selling your house, it has some good tips.

There was someone here the other day saying that they put tumble dryer sheet behind the radiator.

I have a lavender room spray. I don't use a lot, just subtle is best.

We're in the process of selling our house and one thing I've been doing is to either burn some essential oil - we're using either Lime or Sweet orange - or putting some drops of essential oil onto a tissue and leaving it in the wastepaper baskets.

Seems to work very well - when we come back in after the viewing the house smells very nice!

(Oh, and opening the windows for an hour freshens the house - we time this so that it isn't freezing cold when they're viewing!)

This sounds a good idea, I'll get some oil and try it out. Citrus is such a lovely clean smell.

I'm not a fan of air fresheners but Dettol Neutra Air spray does help with pet smells if you're short on time nad guests expected imminently.
make your own natural air fresheners with essential oils - a few drops lavendar, gernanium, or lemon mixed with water in a spray bottle, or dab on a tissue and pop behind rad, or inside loo roll, in fab cond dispenser when you wash cushion covers etc.
avoid getting a scented hycynth plant - the scent is too overpowering !
    good lcuk with your sale.
