Blimey, that cottage of the month is rather eye-wateringly awful
Too too much for me :)

OK, clever creative people, I have a decorating problem. I've just acquired a wardrobe for my dds that I want to paint white so it fits in better with their new bedroom. Dh wants me to paint it so you can still see the wood grain as this would match the bunkbeds, but I've no idea how to do this. Any ideas? It's currently a rather yellowy pine with a very shiny varnish/lacquer surface.

Hopefully you be able to see it

You can use watered down emulsion to paint wood so the grain shows through. It's best to sand back to bare wood first though as then the emulsion highlights the grain.A top coat of varnish will seal it.You can actually use a mix of emulsion and water-based varnish if you like.

oh thats what im scared of dont want it to go yellow, anyone got any suggestions?
I use Coloron liquid wax. It's like a cream that you rub on then leave to dry.It buffs up beautifully and doesn't yellow. It's not marketed for painted furniture but I have never had a problem.

Hi Bibbly, yes it was your sewing box. Good to see someone else using sheets for tablecloths - I've also used them to make kitchen and bathroom curtains in the past.

Daisy_steiner, what wonderful buys and so cheap too. None of the charity shops near me are that cheap. For example the checked tablecloth would be at least £2.50

I agree, they would want 99p/ £1.50 each for the napkin set & cushion covers here, and the Cornish ware would be £5+ although nothing like that is ever left for sale after the dealers have done the rounds. Where my mum helps out they have realised that one man drops in twice a day, sometimes more often. Obviously, it benefits the charities but it does keep the prices high.
I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.

Should do, you'd need to use something like Hammerite paint. It would look very French shabby chic.
