Hi everyone - after some advice again from all you clever people:D. If a surface has been waxed - what do you do to prepare it for painting? Thanks!

  • A word of warning. Don't get too carried away or you might find that you are charged not just customs duty on your parcel, but also a fee by the carrier for collecting the duty. IIRC spending up to £18 including the shipping is the limit.

Addiscomber is right. I've been using fabric.com for years but in the past two or three years they started using UPS for international deliveries and the shipping costs shot up.

Luckily the fabric is fairly cheap and the dollar is low against the pound at present so if you're a quilter you can probably get plenty of fabric for your £18ish. It's a good site though. If you're a dressmaker, like me, you have to be slightly careful about the quality of the dressmaking fabrics, sometimes buying a sample is the best way to go.

...browsing around Wallingford shops. I am "babysitting" my Dad this week and he lives in Oxon, and I haven't been to Wallingford for years. But its got lots of individual boutique-type shops. There was a lovely fabric shop with quilting and applique ideas. And I was almost hyperventilating when I found a shop selling just Cath Kidston and Green Gate stuff!!!!:j :j It had wellies, notebooks, wrapping paper, toys, baby clothes, cushions etc. Not only that but the owner opened a new shop today next door along the same theme but all kitchen stuff! Lucky me! I was very good and spent nothing.

If anyone is after the patchwork quilts from Aldi, I have just bought three and they're lovely. They have the blue and the pink but also a cream one with little pink flowers and a multi coloured floral pastel one. I'll post some pics later.

Cat I'd wash it with sugarsoap then sand, rub over with a tack rag then paint.
    We'll need pics though :D

    Hi

I'm using their water based eggshell at the moment to paint all my bathroom pine (medicine cabinet, towel rail etc) its a lovely paint and goes on really well. I'm using a brush and a roller and only applying very thin coats at a time.... Duck egg blue colour for anyone that is interested.....

Oh and for preparation I just gave it a quick sand.
  • You do need to give furniture a really good sand if it's been waxed previously.I would be tempted to use an oilbased paint if you want a solid smooth finish.I have painted previously waxed pieces with waterbased eggshells and they do chip very easily even with lots of preparation.I wanted the chippy look so I'm not bothered.
