It's ebay that's the problem. We have plenty of charity shops and they are really good for smaller items but they don't tend to sell larger items of furtniture. Also very few 2nd hand furniture shops - in fact I only know of one within a 30 mile radius. Having said all that though I still love living where I do and wouldn't swap it for the world.
I'm in a small town in Lancashire and we have at least 15 charity shops and a couple of charity shops that only sell furniture!!
Have you got any local auction houses? These can be good to pick up bits quite cheaply?0 -
Mine is a coal fire and I love it I had one before in a bedroom and we used it all the time .0

We've got a coal fire in our bedroom and have just bought three more cast iron fireplaces so that we can have one in every room. There is nothing like sitting in front of a roaring fire on a cold winters night.
I do intend to get detectors in all the rooms though as I'm nervous of being gassed to death!0 -

Will be using them in my new flat, when I get it! They're lovely, and can't wait to paint them up and hang my little shabby chic fabric hearts from them.
They'll look great, I'm very jealous - I'm busy covering up all my horrid modern radiators with cabinets!0 -

I agree, I used to sit for hours just looking into the flames when we had one, so soothing.0 -

But if it is a coal fire, you won't be gassed, there will be airflow via the chimney0 -

Hopefully if the chimney draws there wouldn't be a problem. However, I've been advised that coal fires can still produce carbon monoxide gases.
All my chimneys are cleaned often but I'm still going to get a couple of detectors (in main rooms) esp one for the spare bedroom where the gas boiler is located.0 -
Oh I didn't know that:o thought it was just gas appliances.0
