Pooky that is fantastic0

Not sure what Pooky used but I use Nitromors when stripping off old paint but if it's just a thin layer of varnish, a light sanding should be enough.0

Maypole - I just used dh's sander for the big bits - did the smaller fiddly bits by hand with a small soft sanding block.
Not sure if it's any particular design, the panels on the side and the tongue and groove on the back is just cheapie plywood that had been stained to match - I only left bare the bits that looked decent - luckily there was more decent wood than I thought there would be.
The colour is a B&Q satinwood - Simply Sage (or something along those lines) - couldn't justify spending out on the more expensive paints at the moment.
The whole thing cost me............nothing!! I had the sander/sanding block/undercoat/brushes/wax/fabric - the paint I bought (reduced) for £4.98 but I'd sold some of my cards this week so I offset the money on the paint and of course, thanks to the nice lady on freecycle - the dresser was free too.:D"Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. Whatever, it still looks gorgeous.
Thank you all for the tips.0 -
Im so pleased I stumbled upon this thread! What a great idea!
Ive been "doing" shabby chic for a while now and love it so much Ive just opened a small ebay shop selling such things. Some I hand make myself some are vintage treasures that I cant fit in my home but cant leave behind either!!
These are a couple of my own makes:
A desk dresser tidy made with original 1940s postcards and victorian photos
A vintage china tea cup made into a pin cushion!
These items are very cute ebaybaby. Do you find you sell enough to pay for your hobby? I've had such dismal results when I've tried selling something I've made!!:o It ends up costing me cash.0 -
Hopefully at last my photo will appear. The dresser top was sanded down and beeswaxed, as were the handles. The whole piece of furniture had originally been laquered and had turned an awful orangey pine. Used F&B Ringwold Ground oil-based eggshell (3 coats) - delighted with finish.0 -
Sandie, sorry I cant help, never done it myself, but have youchecked out the instructions in these threads

Thought you might like to see these, the dresser in the last picture is thew one I fought so hard to keep when we moved here but it was too big, so my daugher has it in her sitting room.
The first two the wall unit I replaced the dresser with and the settee.
I will take some pictures of my miniscule kitchen later......the council are supposed to be re-fitting them within the next 3 years......then you will see the conditions I labour in...................Was 13st 8 lbs,Now 12st 11 Lost 10 1/4lbs since I started on my diet.0 -
Pookie, that is absolutely beautiful, I love the colour! :T
Sandie, I love the dresser, and well done on getting the photo up!! :T
Thanks for tips about preparing and paint etc. I hope to be doing something like this shortly.
Csarina, shame you couldn't keep the dresser but I love the shelves. I'm looking for something similar, I have lots of pretty old china to display... don't throw the string away. You always need string!
