My house is horribly dark & dank and when we first moved in made the mistake of trying to lighten everything with pure white emulsion... that just made it cold looking dark & dank. After various colour changes I have found that a greyish taupe colour is best and have used cornforth white (f&b) but I know Kelly Hopen does some lovely taupe colours too.
I agree a dark room with white walls, just looks exactly that, still dark, but with white walls You could go with the darkness and make it cosy by using a warmer deeper shade of paint.0 -
kisto - lucky you...........brilliant charity shop finds !
charleybabes - our lounge is a long room and a bit on the dark side - we tried all sorts with it and never felt comfortable then OH suggested dark green - wasn't sure at first but we stuck old pine doors down one wall (everyone things is pine paneling.........lol),exposed the brickwork on another- hard work but worth it in the end............and the rest we painted dark green............and it works ......well for us anyway. The old dresser base we 'found' I painted in a pale green and rubbed it back with sandpaper then dark polish -wipe on wipe off job......just to give it an 'aged' look. Terracotta throws on the settee and arm chairs with an assortment of green/terracotte patterned cushions break up the green and its got that 'feel'' that we've been trying for for years. Just a matter of choise really and what you feel comfortable with.Mary
I'm creative -you can't expect me to be neat too !

I'm sure I've seen a painted dresser on one of the shabby chic sites recommended on here - the one Rachel something or other. It looked nice, have a trawl and you'll get loads of ideas. It will look fab, I've taken a peek and I think you will be able to make it look very good.0 -

It depends whether you want a white with a hint of grey like cornforth white or whether you want something a little warmer.I has used dimity for all my woodwork and have just painted a large dresser bookcase in my sitting room.It looks a little pink on the card but in situ it's more like how white paintwork goes after a few years.Nice and mellow.0 -

Have ‘won’ some green and yellow checked voile on ebay. I’m hoping to use it in my conservatory as curtains but will make a final decision on how I use it when it arrives. Am thinking about covering the cushions on my two wicker chairs but am unsure as yet what sort of fabric to use. This is what the chair looks like at the moment:http://vivwild.wordpress.com/
I was thinking of some kind of green fabric [ green is my favourite colour!] but am not sure if it should be plain or patterned. I like stripes, checks and aztec type designs rather than flowers. We don't need to do it perfectly - good enough is exactly that GOOD ENOUGH.0 -
Viv your link didn't work for me. Well done on the ebay 'win'. X ElNothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task. William James0
