I bought prefolds and wraps for my last 'baby' who is now 16 and I have found the same ones for both of my grandchildren on ebay. They are junior joy and they are getting along fine with them.

We also have the £30 money back scheme from the local council. It is worth finding out if your council does this. And with ours you can still get the dosh back if you buy second hand as long as you have a receipt, these can be handwritten.

I've just ordered 25 hemp nappies from Babybeehinds, with 8 covers, 5 overnight boosters and some microfleece liners, which is apparently good for 2 days between washes (realistically probably less when Sprog first arrives). They're birth-to-potty ones, although the covers are "sized".

I didn't get a money back scheme from my local council, as apparently they're not sure about the "environmental soundness". *sigh*

My DD is now 7 weeks old, we have been using Little Lambs bamboo nappies since she was about 1 week old. I think they are fantastic, we have never really had any leaks or problems with them. Occasionally now when she sleeps through they are very wet in the morning but seem to be contained fine. They are a shaped inner, with a booster and fleece liner with a breathable outer wrap. I think I paid £290 for a birth to potty pack. However, I did buy a number of trial packs of different types and tried them out on her before setlling on the Little Lambs ones. I tried the Mothercare SmartNappy, Bambino Mio, Little Lambs and TotsBots. Mostly I borrowed to try out, but I did buy the Mothercare trial pack.

For further moneysaving I wash them with Ecoballs, and although there are occasionaly some poo stains that don't quite come out, hanging them outside on the line soon bleaches them out. They don't smell at all. I actually use Ecoballs for all our washing and have never had anything not come out clean at 40° (although I do the nappies at 60°)

Completely agree with you on the cost issue - I think I read somewhere that you can spend £1200 on disposables from birth to potty - not to mention the evironmental impact. I am also unlucky enough to be in an area that doesn't offer a subsidy - boo to West Oxfordshire council...

Be prepared for lots of people to think you are mad for using cloth nappies - and then to be swiftly converted when you start discussing cost issues and demonstrating how easy they are to use!

I got some off freecycle for trials, and have re-freecylced the ones I didn't want / like.

Good luck with your little one, my little accident has changed my life and I wouldn't go back for the world. Even though I was convinced I wasn't ready for children and wouldn't be for some time - and I wanted to concentrate on my career. Now the career just seems so much less important than my screaming, pooing, obstreperous little daughter! The smiles make it all worth it, though....

  • DD2 is now nealy 9 and was a cloth bum almost from birth (inc CM). I know nappies have changed now (and I love to see a cloth bum!) but my favourite of all time were my terries- really thick lovely ones. I used them with nippas and also stuffed fuzzis for the CM too with them.

Shaped nappies I did like but different kinds were very variable.

My only advice is be wary of birth to potty offers till you have tried them on your baby/your washing rota etc. Lots of the nappies do better at different stages. Personally a pad fold "prefold"type in a wrap (Bambino mio being the most well known) were a dead loss at any stage:rotfl: poo on wrap every time!!

Be brave and try some terry squares- If you only use them as mopping cloths and changements they will be golden (I had this lot of terries for that perpose for the elder 2, they are still in use as hand towels when camping etc now!)

Aha, this has answered a question I needed to ask! I'm a recent convert to Ecoballs but wasn't sure whether they'd work on nappies or not. Fantastic!

It sounds like the terry nappy route may be for me - had thought of this as too old fashioned before, even though I was thinking of reusables.

Would I have to buy smaller terry squares for newborn or would the same size square fit from birth to toddler with different folds? And what wraps would you recommend? Are there any funky ones that would go well with terries? (priorities eh lol)

  • you can buy 2 different sizes for a neater fit, however a regular size terry will fit from birth to potty in reality :) As for wraps Motherease Rikki wraps are always very reliable. For the cute factor you could buy some pocket nappies and stuff them with the terry squares :)

You just need enough terries- a doz will do, but 2 would be better- different folds for different sized babies (the nappy lady or similar site will do it for you). Buy the nicest, fluffiest terries you can (they wont be cheapest but will last well and absorb beautifully). I used los of different wraps for different sizes and times of day- for nights fleece or wool was great (though a well padded terry bum with wool over the top is serious weeble territory:rotfl: . Day use (esp smal babies and less experienced folders!) velcro wraps tuck/hold all in well and neat under clothes. Motherease were probably the best I found but there are no doubt others out that are better...I also used the popper ME wraps wich were great too.

the funkiest that were around 9 yrs ago were the ME with whales but there are so many others around now.

AVOID anything with a pretty cover that is a wicking fabric (eg cotton) they look great but wet creeps round drpressingly often...
