Not sure where you live, but Google "Real Nappy Project" and your county to see what comes up. In many counties, the project will give you, say £30, if you spend £60+ on real nappies and will also give advice as to what to use.

I found the lollipop advisor helpful. But I got a good deal on kushies ultra on ebay from Canada and that's what I used for my first child and they lasted a while for my second too. But they aren't made to last too long and I cut out the flaps and now use them for liners for ordinary terries.

I LOVE the terries. I use rikki wraps, a terry folded into a pad shape and a washable liner. No pins, no messing about. When he was smaller, there were some good terry folds that I used with a nappy nippa (a sort of rubber stretchy hook rather than pins.) He's nearly a year old now though so the pad fold is perfect and not too bulky.

Some of the terries I use are on their second baby (my 2 sons) but some are on their 6th (passed down through 3 families.) still in excellent condition.

They are easier to master than they look.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.
  • We've had a lot of advice from the nappy lady - we've mainly used bambino mio for our 3, although we have used other reusables too.

I personally would join a parenting website or two, plus I wouldn't fork out on one complete "system", instead get 3 or 4 different ones and see which one you like first. My collection is made up of allsorts. Thick ones for night-time, all-in-ones for in the nappy bag, but when at home I really love just using terry squares! There are loads of great folds to suit different baby shapes and they dry super quick.

If I had to pick a shaped nappy then my favourites are Tots Bots and Bumbles.

Lots of my collection are second hand too which saved a fortune. Mostly bought on buy and sell boards of parenting forums (PM me for some links!)

I have 5 wraps (covers) as you can get away with the same one for a few changes and just change the nappy inside. You will also need liners, either fleece which help baby stay dry, or paper which are disposable.
  • i tried loads of different nappies until i found a few i liked. i bought some of mine second hand and am now selling them on as ds is potty trained. they may seem expensive at first but you can get some of the money back by selling them on.
my favourites were motherease one size and totsbots. i liked the motherease which you can buy in waitrose , basic looking but really leak proof.
i also found that different nappies suited my daughter better than my son so bear that in mind too

  • Unfortunately the nappy lady and ebay have stopped selling secondhand cloth nappies but there is an auction site usednappies.co.uk. It's quite new but worth a look. I'd second what others have said about Lollipop as it's good to see and feel the different nappies. There are so many different types now. I found the motherease airflow wraps the best fwiw.

lollipop and various other places do trial buckets which are a good way of getting to grips with cloth nappies as you get your hands on real nappies and can see how they wash and most importantly dry for you (if you're not using a tumble dryer and live in a hard water area for instance then it may limit your choices). You may find there's a nappuccino in your area (coffee morning where you can view nappies). If you search google for cloth nappies and your county then you may find a local seller who will do home visits with trial buckets. It's a good idea to at least narrow it down to whether you want a birth to potty nappy or sized nappies and whether you want nappies with a separate wrap or all in ones or pocket/stuffable nappies. Once you decide what you want then shop around for where to get them cheapest.

I like having a mix of nappies as different ones suit different occasions and as your baby grows different nappies fit better at different times. If you want an easy life then you might find something like a Bum Genius nappy good as they're as easy as disposables but they're quite expensive. Some people love their birth to potty systems (and if you're lucky enough that they fit your baby well then they're a cheaper way of doing cloth). The cheapest of all is usually Terries (although make sure you get a good quality Terry if you go down this route). A lot of people use Tots Bots for newborns and then branch out once they've got the hang of cloth. But what you find with most cloth users is that it's addictive and you just have to try a new nappy or just buy a new one cos it looks cute every now and then anyway ;)

If you're going to use cloth for a newborn then you'll need about 20 nappies and 5+ wraps which is a big outlay if you're not sure you'll use them. Using fleece liners is good as it helps reduce staining but you can just buy a length of fleece fabric and cut it up.
  • I've only ever used motherease one size ones - we bought them second hand. We also use the motherease airflow wraps, although I bought one of the cow prints wraps from http://exclusivesbyweenotions.com/wn/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=10&zenid=53c892c4827ee56e66498f6953b8a885. It makes me smile everytime I put it on DS, so I think it was worth it...lol.
