I`m going to be a grandma in a few weeks and I have 3 adult children.
I have been helping my dd and her dh all I can re buying things and doing things etc. I am now sorting out nappies for her. I am so amazed at the assortment available these days. I brought my 3 up on terry squares
My dd wants to use re-usable nappies so I have bought her an assortment of second hand ones ie 2 little lamb, 2 bamboozles, 1 tots bots cotton, 12 bambino mio (her choice), 2 motherease and I have bought 7 new bumbles because they sound great. The second hand price is high so we can wash and sell the ones she doesn`t like
Then I saw 12 harringtons terry squares in an old package so I bought them. What good quality. I honestly don`t know why more mums don`t use this type of nappy. Folding isn`t difficult and they can take a liner and a booster. I found a fold very suitable for a newborn and there are umpteen folds to pick from. I have pre-washed these squares 3 times and they are already almost dry, indoors on an airer. I would say they would take an hour outside on a line on a good day
I washed them in ecover and used lakeland washer balls (the pummelling set of 9) and the nappies feel good to the touch
What is it with people getting sucked in to paying so much for shaped nappies? I paid £15 for the 12 harringtons and they can be used for umpteen tasks when their primary function is over
I bought 38 nappies and assorted wraps, liners and nippas for a total of £154 and I reckon we`ll get about £100 back when we re-sell but we won`t be re-selling the harringtons
What are your experiences with nappies?

Thanks for all that useful information. I don't have anything to add I'm afraid but I will be watching this thread with interest.
We have our first (much awaited and longed for) baby on the way and I really would like to use a good nappy system. I have bought some disposables for the first month or so and then want to switch for the rest of the babies nappy wearing life.
My concern is that we might spend a lot of money on a 'nappy system' only to discover that it is not the right one for us and that would be a waste of money but I think you have come up with a great idea here ... one that I will likely copy! Thank you!0 -
I use a combination of fitteds and pockets/all in ones on my dd.
She is a very heavy wetter and find these work best for us. I also use wool longies instead of PUL wraps sometimes.
I would use terries but I dont think they would work for us. I dont know if I would be able to keep her still long enough to put it on her and would have to spend ages trying to work out what fold would suit her best. I would also need to find some wraps that would work well with terries and not sure what would. I use Motherease and these work very well. My dd is very long and thin with skinny legs!
I started of buying second hand nappies and worked out pretty quickly what works for us.0 -
Glad I am not the only one who loves terries!
i have used terries for both my two with Motherease outers and oblongs of fleece material as one way liners. I just fold the nappies into a large sanitary towel shape (took a bit of trial and error) and tuck them into the outer. They are cheap and dry quicker than the shaped nappies (real bonus in this weather)
It is worth trying out a few different outers to see which ones work best for you but i cant fault the Motherease ones and it definately isnt worth skimping on decent outers.0 -
i like terries and there are loads of different types of material u can get too
however sometimes cheap ones just wont cut it as well as the ones you pay slightly more for, but hey for the price you can buy a 2nd set anyways
If you ever want any advice or help with nappies etc just give me a shout btw
Superdog IMO the outer is the most important part, its easy enough to boost nappies etc, but leeks are a big pain0 -
If I had no 3, I would definitely start with terries. I used to be a cloth nappy advisor, and sold hundreds of terries because they are cheap and versatile.
I used a mixture of nappies on my 2 - terries to start with, then we used Weenee pants with prefolds or terries, but that was almost 8 years ago  and the cloth nappy market has changed massively since then. I would have terries again fastened with nappi nippas with a Motherease or OneLife wrap the move on to possibly OneLife or Tots Bamboozles when the baby got more wriggly or went to childcare.
As far as folding goes, I used the Chinese/Bat fold. I used to get the nappies stacked ready to put on the baby long before the nappy change so that they were then as easy as a disp to put on. DD1 now 7 can fold one perfectly competently, as she demonstrated to our MP last year0 -
madmel - u where a lollipop girl werent u? lol thats what i am0

madmel, the bat fold is the one I learnt yesterday

it`s very easy and makes a very neat nappy. I have been collecting motherease wraps too. It`s a better fold that the one I was taught when mine were babies but even so my babies did very well on 24 terries for 3 and I don`t remember them getting nappy rash apart from the one time I tried disposables
I need to get some fleece liners organised now. I have a good think fleece cot blanket going spare. I think I`ll cut that up as it will just be cluttering the airing cupboard0 -
thanks for those instructions kittie I tried to do that the other day using the nappylady instructions but just couldn't work it out (nappy brain I suspect!) but I've cracked it this time!
I'm going to start with muslins and terries along with motherease wraps and see how I get on. I may then move onto shaped nappies at least some of the time (partly as I'm not sure my OH is good at origami)
I only bought one lot of cheap terries but they definitely feel better now they've been washed... I may have to invest in some thicker ones though but will wait and see how I get on. I've got some fleece liners and I've also been given some prefolds so I think I'll be ok for a while.0 -
to start with can i say try putting a disposable liner over ur fleece one? newborn poo will stick the the fleece and be a nightmare to wash off sometimes. With a disposable over it you can throw away the poo but still get the dry feeling from the fleece
Justie - i love prefolds. Some people have a downer on them but ignore them, they are great. In the future u can also use them to stuff pockets and that too
Oh and for anyone looking 2nd hand i found this site the other day which seems to have replace ebay for the 2nd hand nappy sales. https://www.usednappies.co.uk and there is also the nappy lady classifieds which are great0 -
thanks for the tip lilmiss I was thinking about doing that but hadn't quite got myself together and I need to buy some disposable liners when I get my nappy nippers. I've got a selection of different nappies that I will try out and see which suit. I can see that prefolds and terries will be much easier to dry than shaped but I also have to try and keep things simple for my OH.0
