I'm a total wimp.  I'm redoing the shawl I knit for my DIL.  It's the "Glasgow Rose" stole.  2ply lace weight.  The bride's colours are teal and grey and she'd like the shawl in a teal tone.  So, I'm letting the wool shop lady pick.
If it's this pattern, that's not 'total wimp' territory! Looks gorgeous.
That's it.  I knit it for my DIL in a colour called Clematis by Jamieson.  It picks up the purple grey colour in my son's kilt.  I emailed the wool shop here in Canada that sells Jamieson's wool and told her which two shades I liked and a link to the tartan and let her pick.  She did a great job.   That's why I trust her judgement on the colours.

There is also a version of the shawl in a more traditional half circle shape.  But I felt that the stole was more useful and practical.

The great thing is the pattern is written and charted.  So I was happy give me pages of row by row instructions any day.  I just can't follow charts.  My brain just doesn't work it out.

Wondercollie, how's the knitting going? It's a beautiful pattern and I'm sure that the finished stole will look amazing.

Snowbird20, how is your shawl getting on? Have you had time to do any more?

now I'm in a dither ... DS3 has just got engaged, and half of me would like to offer to knit a stole for his lovely fiancee, and half of me is too terrified ... While I love the look of that pattern, I think I need a simple repeating job.

The thing is, I'll need to start good and early, but I don't know how soon she'll know what colours she's using, because they're hoping to marry next year, but realise there's going to be a lot of pressure on Saturdays (teachers in the family).

Maybe I just need to offer, and see what she says.

I am NOT knitting one of those jobs you can pass through a wedding ring, before anyone suggests it. Mum did one of those for my sister ...

  • Haven't started the beast still waiting for the wool.  The shop owner was sick over Christmas and has a backlog to work through.

@PipneyJane once you get the rose motif done,it's a straight forward latice work type of knit and the edging is what it is.

My to be knit pile includes two christening shawls in case I ever get to be a granny.  Not holding my breath or putting on pressure.  But I need to get cracking before my eyesight gets worse.

Not heard whether DIL-to- be would like anything knitted and not sure whether to chase her or not.

However, I Kitchenered (is that a word? I feel it should be ...) the first sock during a knitting Zoom on Monday, and the second in the Zoom I went to afterwards. Posted them off on Tuesday. Hope they are the right size, the recipient wasn't as communicative as I would have liked!

DIL-to-be has declined the offer of a knit, so back to finding a new project or two. Think I will probably start some more socks, and if the recipient of the pair above doesn't want them, I'll have them for myself.

But, fiddling about this morning, trying to solve the problem of the cardigan that doesn't have enough buttons on it.
    • Don't want to add poppers because they will show when it's not done up (probably quite a lot of the time).
    • Tried to 'force' a buttonhole into a test square, didn't work.
    • Briefly wondered about doing a sewn buttonhole and snipping it, chickened out of even trying it.
    • Considered undoing the whole buttonhole band and re-knitting that side: hmmmm. That would put the cardigan out of commission for quite a while.
And then it hit me! I need to knit a length of buttonhole band and attach it BEHIND the current bit of band which doesn't have any buttonholes. When the cardigan is done up (as I said, probably not a lot of the time) the top set of buttons won't show, but when it's undone, the buttons WILL show. The new bit of band can be thinner than the original, so not long to knit, and should be almost invisible.

    What have I missed?

Sue, I once saw a cardi with a strip of fabric/ribbon sewn on the inside of the button band. Maybe you could do something like that, but in the way you described. Then when the cardi is open there would be some added interest just hiding around the corner!

Now there's a thought! I must ask my LYS if they've got anything that might be useful. Save knitting the new band: I know exactly what you mean but the holes would need to be the right distance apart, and it would have to be a good colour.

OR! I know I've got some tape the right width and a good colour. Might be able to persuade my sewing machine to make buttonholes in that.

A friend suggesting making an icord to make loops on the wrong side of the buttonhole band, so that's another idea to think about.

Mind you I've been living in a down-filled gilet for weeks and haven't needed the cardigan!

  • My great aunt taught me very basic knitting when I was 9. A whole 14 years later (having only knitted a few scarves in that time) still only have that basic level of knitting!

What an amazing thread to find, excited to look through it to see if I can gain any tips, ideas and inspiration so I can make better gifts than a solid colour scarf!
