  • Evening everyone

Plumduff, the waistcoat looks great! Love the little coloured spots in the yarn! I saw a very similar yarn a year or two back, but it was yellow with coloured spots.

Basically spent the whole day knitting and finally see a real progress on my jumper and hope that I can get to the point where I start knitting in the round somewhen this week so that I can do some mindless kniting on holidays. There is a 8 hour drive which can get quite boring as a passenger so I intend to make the best out of it and knit.
The only things that annoys me is that there is one row which is very lose and which I only realized 10 rows later, so too late to go back and I'm not frogging it because of that, so I hope I can block it out somehow...

Besides the jumper I will take a hat with me on holiday so that I have a small project to work on at the beach while the jumper is for evenings and car rides. My mum and I don't have enough hats to put one into each of the christmas parcels we're packing for charity... In theory she could supply all the parcels as she is a quick knitter with a lot of time (basically she has a 40% job and the rest of the week is filled with a little charity work and knitting...) but I want to knit some as well.

Finished the socks last Sunday, they are ways too wide but they are my first ever socks and I will just wear them for hanging out at home because I don't want to give them away.
Sock knitting lessons with D turned out very funny and enjoyable and according to her I'm now officially a big girl... I'm 28 and felt like getting praise from granny... :-)

If that doesn't work can you run an extra line of yarn along the back (as if you were weaving in ends) to tighten up those stitches? (Essentially weave in the rows above/below that row to get it back to the right height?)
  • That's me :) I've just this minute finished sewing up the pink heart jumper PHEW I'm glad that's done.

I will get back to Mum's waistcoat tomorrow. I shall post a pic of pink jumper tomorrow.

    Happy knitting xx

  • Hi, well I eventually finished dgd pink jumper. I will put it by for her Christmas. I'm back to knitting mum's Aran weight waistcoat. I'm doing it in a basket stitch instead of the usual cables but can't wait to get it finished.

There's a challenge on one of the Christmas threads - this month the theme is snow so I'm going to knit a pair of red fingerless gloves with a snowman on them. They shouldn't take long.

Here's a pic of the pick jumper that ended up being a marathon fix :rotfl:

    Happy knitting

  • Evening everyone

Just packed all the yarn for my jumper into my suitcase as I could not decide how much yarn I wanted to pack and could not bear the thought of running out of it... So all the yarn it is then... We're travelling with the campervan, so no issue with space and weight and there are about 20 hours of car rides so plenty of time to knit... Otherwise the thing I do is snack, so knitting is the better option...

Thank you Hiddenshadow, I will keep it in mind in case I can't get rid of the too lose row in any other way.

Plumduff, is there anything else you do besides knitting? ANother very lovely garnment, looks simple but yet very effective!

A friend more or less anounced that she wishes for pink socks for Christmas... Funny enough I've already bought pink yarn to knit her a pair of socks as I knew she would eventually ask for it... She asked for regular updates on my sock knitting progress...

So, will now finally join back and front of my jumper so that I'm ready for holidays.

    Have a nice evening everyone

  • Ha ha - funny you should ask that Ricarda Racoon 😀.
From being a teenager I always loved sewing and knitting. I made my wedding dress way back in 1977. My three children's clothes were all handmade mostly through necessity. There were no shops like Primark back then and shop bought were so expensive.

I retired 11 months ago and am so enjoying my life - I can craft all day and then some :j I now also sew quilts and recently memory quilts and cushions made from baby clothes. Today I made my first ever Roman blind - a change from the usual curtains.

Even after 11 months I still cannot believe that this is my life now and I so enjoy sharing my enthusiasm with you all.

    Happy knitting xx

PS the pink jumper is a very simple but effective pattern that was free in a magazine

  • plumduff55 I too craft most of the day. I mainly do knitting and I am knitting my own designs which tends to mean a lot of frogging or taking hours to do the foundation row of an Aran type jumper because I slightly change the pattern for back front or sleeves.

I did consider selling patterns until I worked out how much laborious writing out of the pattern there would be and the pattern sometimes has to be altered for some sizes so I would have to knit most of the sizes to be sure of fit. No way am I doing all of that for the few pence I would earn per hour.

I certainly am enjoying designing something for one person and one person only. I have been retired 10 years but I only took up knitting again a couple of years ago. I stopped knitting about the time I retired because I was getting a lot of pain from my arthritis. Whatever it was it's rarely a problem now. I just stop for a while if it's painful.

I think a hobby you really enjoy is the secret to a happy retirement. Making presents is also a solution to keeping up with the cost of materials. I also make things for charity often using up scraps.

One good thing about knitting is you can watch videos while knitting. I read a lot on philosophy when I was young. Now I am studying it seriously on YouTube. There is lots of material and thousands of university lectures. If I get stuck I can go back and watch the lecture as many times as I need or find dozens of lectures on the same idea and watch them until I understand.

I also watch lots of science and history on YT as well.
  • NurseMaggie - I really enjoyed reading your post and it's great to hear that after 10 years retirement you are still knitting and active. I hope I'm like that in 10 years. Funnily enough, when I retired I worried about what I would do as I was bothered with chronic neck and shoulder pain and had to strictly limit hours spent knitting and sewing. But that has mostly disappeared and I now spend more time crafting than ever. My sister thinks this was caused by stress at work - maybe she's right.

I also like watching tv while I'm crafting. I have made the small bedroom into a craft room and bought a little smart tv when I retired. It sits on my big sewing table and I can watch YouTube and catch up on programmes while I'm sewing. I usually sew up till about 2 pm and knit from 3.15 onwards ( channel 5 film starts at this time). If it's dry I go for a short walk at 2pm.

I feel so lucky having this life now. My crafting which has sustained me through many hard times when the children were growing up is now enriching my life in retirement.

    Happy knitting xx

  • Hi!
I've had a look at some photos on the thread and you are a talented bunch!
I'm wondering if you can help me with bobble knitting. I can make them ok, but there always seems to be a little hole next to the bobble one one side. Have tried everything I can think of to rectify this when knitting, but those blasted holes are still there! Is this just what happens or is there a solution? Do you leave them or sew them up?
Apologies if this question has already been asked, but haven't had the time to read all the posts.
  • Grumpmum I can't remember I have not done any bobbles for years. I expect it may get rid of them if you pull your yarn really tight before doing the next stitch. I do that after cabling or I get a hole. maybe someone else will know.
