Hi. I used to knit quite a lot many years ago and recently my hands have been itching to get going again, and then last week a friend introduced me to crochet, which I am loving!

Can anyone point me in the direction of a cheapish place to buy supplies? My daughter wants to learn too, but I only have 2 very small needles so I need a couple of larger ones and a supply of cheap wool for us both to practise with.

Sorry if this has been discussed on this forum before - I went back a couple of pages and couldn't see anything

    Many thanks :)

I've just received my 2nd order from here

    http://www.knit-n-!!!!!.co.uk/

Ordered Tuesday, posted 1st class Wednesday and arrived Thursday :money: I even got a personal email to tell me my order was being posted.

    I've also used

    http://www.kempswoolshop.com/

    http://www.deramores.com/

    http://www.blacksheepwools.com/

and this site has been highly recommended by others on MSE

    Hi 2Childmum

The cheapest yarn you will find is poundshops, poundstretcher, B&M, Wilco's. Shop around them all and see what you like IMO Poundstrecher seems to be the best quality for the price.

When you are ready for better quality yarns and wool the websites listed above are all good.

knitting needles, Wilko's, if you have a local market there may be a knitting stall or like mine it is a mixture of yarn and knitting requisites and haberdashery. I find mine very useful. Google for a local yarn shop and of course the well know hobby shop. Most of the websites also sell needles, hook etc.

  • Thanks for your help. I went to the hobby shop and bought a size 4 and a size 6 hook, and some DK wool and I have found some chunky under my bed! DD has also found a crochet set someone gave her a while ago, but it uses American rather than British terms, - luckily I had already worked out the difference. The hooks in it are a bit cheap and nasty and the wool not brilliant, but it does have left handed instructions which have been helpful and has at least got her going.
Our local charity shop used to sell wool but it seems to have vanished. Our local wool shop has just shut down.:( I will keep a look out in pound shops and there is a market about 15mins drive away so I may investigate there.
    I've bookmarked the websites too.
    Thanks again

wilkinsons shops sell wool and it may be worth checking your local indie chemist - ours have quite a big range of wools in theirs.

knitting littleyellowducks and prem baby hats at the mo and have just finished a giant chunky cushion cover to use up some odd balls of stash.

 Finished off a King Cole Chunky bolero in White Tinsel last night for my granddaughter and to my horror this morning discovered I had sewn in one of the sleeves the wrong way round! Have spent over an hour to try and unpick but totally unsuccessful. Because of the type of yarn it is the stitches just disappear into the garment!

Oh well, back to the drawing board! That will teach me to watch Strictly instead of concentrating on what I am doing.

Oh no Azzabazza how frustrating for you. Done daft things myself a few times. I hope you can sort it out one way or t'other without too much hassle.

Here is what I'm knitting at the moment...using up my bits and bobs.

oh Azzabazz, I think there is a tequnique that would work for cutting it out, in Scandinavian knitting. You would have to look on you tube.

Pennib how do you do that stitch, it looks very interesting?
