Woohoo - I get to join the knitting thread!!!!
I have wanted to join in for ages - been wanting to start knitting for ages, but wouldn't let myself join the thread until I had started knitting something.
I can do basic plain and purl stitch, cast on and off. I was taught in primary school, and grew up watching my mother knit. I am 33 now and luckily remember these basics well.
I have started a log cabin blanket, planning to make it big enough to be a snuggle blanket for the living room when we have a good film on in the winter. Using 6 pastle shades - pink, blue, lavender, peach, mint green and cream. It looks so pretty so far! I'm not following a strict pattern, its based on looking at lots and lots of pictures of log cabin blankets on google. Adding each log has been a bit of a challenge - working out how to knit each new one on. But i seem to have the hang of it now. Its quite addictive!
Looking forward to lurking on here, now that I feel like a real knitter.:j got married 3rd May 2013 :beer:0 -

Glad to be of help - it's taken me a few years to find a good method so I'm happy to share the joy
If you need a stretchy cast on, I've found the Twisted German to be a good one

Hello, hoping someone can help on here. I want to make this cardi as a Christmas present for my sister http://www.garnstudio.com/lang/us/pattern.php?id=6414&lang=us
but we are both trying to do our presents on a budget (I'm calling it knitmas, shes doing crochetmas) anyway can anyone help me work out what a cheaper alternative to the suggested wool would be? It says sport weight (which I'm not even sure what that is in the UK) but its actually knit with two strands held together so I'm not sure if I could sub it for a thicker wool and what the equivalent would be?
I know it wont be as soft and luxurious as the expensive wool obviously but I'm hoping that it would still look ok? Any ideas??
Am currently finishing off my daughters Christmas stocking, just on the toe now and then need to add the heel and line it and I'm done! (although this is being fit in inbetween making my wedding flowers/decorations so not going too fast.. 6 weeks to go and then let knitmas start properly!)
Thanks in advance for any help, I've got myself very confused looking at different wool weights etcMay Grocery Challenge -£216/4000 -
Hi Pablosmummy
This may help you
Light Fingering / 3 ply
Fingering / 4 ply
Sport / 5 ply
DK / 8 ply
Worsted / 10 ply
Two strands of sport weight = 10 ply which is Aran weight which is 20 stitches to 4 inches.
Look at this and you should be able to work out alternative yarns, even though you may need to change needle size to get gauge.

Another way would be to get you sister's measurements and knit to them.Jack of all trades ... Master of none

thanks for that link, I've added it to favourites. The cardi is knit with 1 strand sport and one strand lace sooo I'm think of just getting a nice dk and adjusting the needle size to get the right guage... would that work? Normally I just wing it but I actually want it to be a half decent present.
On a side note, finished the toe of the stocking, picked up the heel and then my toddlers attacked so its been put away until this evening when its safe again.
(if anyone wants to add me on Ravelry I have the same name on there so feel free to add me)May Grocery Challenge -£216/4000 -
Sorry I didn't read all the details from the pattern and assumed it 2 strands of sport weight.
I would try the DK - but remember that not all DK is the same, I find that there is thicker and thinner. If you are OK to play around with needle size, I'm sure you'll crack it.

After looking at the pattern, the gauge is 17 sts x 22 rows on 5mm needles over st-st, with one strand of each together. So that is Aran weight.
You should do a swatch to check. As long as you can get the number of sts correct, you should be OK.Needs, NOT wants!
