Ebay auctions can be good - if you are familiar with the quality and squishiness of brands.
Kemps Wools have some excellent end-of-season bargains at times (online).
Google the brand/type of yarn you want, to find HighSt shops with the keenest offers/clearance and free postage on purchases over £15+.
Checkout 'Buy It Now' and business sellers on Ebay - some offer brands at less than good local prices, and if you buy enough, postage can be cheaper than the cost of fuel/bus going into town. Some only charge for the first ball! Also, for small projects/stripes you can buy 2 x 25g balls of DK for 99p.
Other places that I've bought from are:
Deramores - pricey, even with the free postage offer. VERY fast.
Wool Warehouse - can save on boutique prices. VERY fast.
Wee County Yarns - some good prices/offers and excellent service.
Yeoman Yarns - FREE postage on everything. Good for cones/balls. Good quality.
Texere - yarns and spinning fibres.
Marriner yarns - Acrylic DK £1/100g.
Charity Shops
Tip:
Budget Acrylic can feel quite harsh in the ball and when knitting, but softens up A LOT, when washed in hand-hot water. Rinse in cold water, with or without softener, short spin, cool tumble/air dry... soft enough for baby! (Even easier on your fingers if you skein it round your hand and elbow or a chair, tie it with figure-of-8 scrap yarn through and round the skein, in 3-4 places and machine wash 40deg and dry, BEFORE knitting/crocheting!Needs, NOT wants!

It depends what you want. Places like Hobbycraft are good for the basic stuff and they often have a "three for two" offer on wool.
It's worth asking in charity shops as they often keep wool in the back.John Lewis sell yarn and I've just made my grandson a stocking in Wilkos acrylic which has turned out ok.
There are some lovely specialist wool shops around now.Black Sheep is good. Also there's a lovely shop in Clapham near Settle called Beckside Yarns and Purlcity in Port St, Manchester has a good selection-not cheap but some lovely yarn.
You could look on Ravelry for information about yarn shops near you or buy a knitting magazine-they seem to be full ofadverts.0 -
I second (or third
) Black Sheep Wools!
Deramores have a promo on till 17 Dec - "up to 40% off". Yarns start at 59p and over £25 is post free.Needs, NOT wants!

Abakhan in Chester and various places in the north, as well as online,
They sell packs at good prices. Visiting their mill in Mostyn, North Wales is real treat!Member #14 of SKI-ers club
