Can i ask a silly question please?

I love knitting socks but no matter how carefully I wash them they always felt after a couple of wears. Is this normal, does it matter? My son thinks it makes them better/even more comfortable. Any tips gratefully received.

I've usually done them on a cold wool wash, the most recent pair I've washed by hand prior to my daughter wearing them so fingers crossed

    Hi,

I don't know that particular wool, but unless it's super-special it doesn't appear to be that great a deal. A 100gm ball of regia is approx 3.99 on ebay - less at auction - and I know some folks with Aldi/lidl nearby have found sock yarn there also. Maybe have a browse around and compare prices?

I knit a lot of socks. I think that is a bargain at £5 for 100g - especially as it's free postage over £15. Schoeller and Stahl Fortissima Mexiko is a good sock yarn (60% superwash wool + 40%polyester). I have only seen Regia on Ebay at £3.99 for 50g.

Other places are selling King Cole Zig Zag (60/40) at reduced prices in space-dyed and plains at reduced prices - presumably discontinued colours. I've just managed to stock up for Christmas socks at £2.50/100g :T ...but it's sold out now. If you can get it at £3.99 or less, go for it. (Don't forget to include any p+p in your calculations per ball!)

That does sound an ok deal. Double check though what shades they are sending, as your idea and their idea of a 'lovely selection of shades' may differ!

I have rarely seen 100g balls of Regia at the price, tbh the 50g balls normally cost more than that, on e-bay and other places.

The cheapest I have got Regia was actually in Hobbycraft when some went through at £1 per ball, and it was also on 3 for 2 recently (though about £4 per ball at that point). I have tried the Lidl sock yarn, some if it is ok- the stuff with cotton in, but the other stuff (which I also have) apparently felts, so am wary to use that. If you are buying second hand wool (still in ball band but from someone's house) always check if it is smoke/pet free as I have come across yarns smelling strongly of cats and of smoke! Yes you can wash it but it is a pain to knit with it smelling and then wash (and washing it un-knitted is a pain too!).

Have had a look at their website and it's basically the six colours in the picture. If I get those I'll be happy enough.
