Your gauge needs to be approx 32 stitches per 4 inches, knitted in rib.
You need to use a 2.5mm needle, which is an old UK 13- double pointed needles (4 or 5) or circular needles (1 or 2).
You will need at least 338 metres of yarn- the ball band will tell you how many metres per ball.

Thanks Orkney, yes it helps a lot! I've just got a beginners knitting book which arrived this morning, and I was so excited I bounded down to the CS to buy some more needles and wool.
So... I have some feather long pile knitting yarn, can I knit with it as normal yarn, casting on and so forth?
I will try not to ask too many silly questions.0 -

I am not sure what sort of yarn you mean, what is the exact type?

Yes! Thanks Mrs MP, I've seen the Wendy Rococo yarn and this is somewhat similar, but much tinier...in pink.I just have 50g, so imagine what I knit will be small. Maybe a scarf? Inside I'm jumping up and down with excitment at the thought of creating something.

That's a lovely pattern and yours looks gorgeous - I've just queued it up on ravelery - can't believe it's a free pattern - it's very generous of the designer.0 -
