have finally got around to posting a picture of the jumper i knitted with all the small balls of wool i had floating around. making a feature of the knots used to attach next ball of wool. am already getting a small stash of small balls. i know its mad but if they are on sale or in charity shop i simply have to buy them whether there is enough to make a garment or not. i have also dragged out a half finished garment to complete and as punishment to myself obviously i dont knoe exactly what part of the pattern i am on

Hi all,
I've just started knitting a pair of mittens for the first time, full size ones not fingerless ones. My query is that I expected the top of the mitten to be knitted similar to the way you do the decrease shaping of a sock but all the patterns I've seen seem to decrease evenly all along the round and then pull up the last few stitches at the top. (I've looked at lots of patterns on Ravelry.) Is this the best way to do mittens or could I TRY to adapt a sock pattern? I feel as though the mittens would lie flatter if done the sock way but perhaps I'm completely wrong. Your advice would really be appreciated and if anyone could point me to a pattern that would be great.0 -

When searching for patterns use the filter 'kitchener/grafting' listed under Attributes - Construction. That should give you the sock toe finishing technique.
Search results using 'mittens', 'knitting' and filtered for 'kitchener/grafting':

one was a brown/coffe/cream mix the other pale ble/lilac/white

i purchased some what they called frilly yarn from a website run in turkey, there wool is amazingly cheap but postage through the roof. well i digress as usual, being that its from turkey they are not as easy to contact with any query and was trying to post a link but page says they are now sold out of it. from what i have seen this yarn looks like twisted ribbon that when you open up you can see four or five rows of nothing more than holes really at the top and then a more finished part at the bottom. the hoops there to pick up and knit with and the finished end i am guessing what causes the frill but dont know for definite. well my cool once opened is completely finished and you would need to make a hole to pick up. have i bought the completely wrong wool for the scarf i wanted or do i just need a little more instruction please0
