  • No, a hat for myself - i'm making it up as I go along so really want to knit at my thinking speed - everytime the yarn snags I forget where I am!

Welcome kymrob, and congrats on stepping into the world of knittng. I knit my socks using double-pojted pins (DPNs), they come in sets of either 4s (european) or 5s (american). You can also use cicular needles to knit them, but I haven't ventured that far, like using the DPNs and never seem to have the time too take out to learn the different techniques.

See here for a great tutorial for using 4 pins. I printed all of the instructions out and referred to them a lot for my first few pairs, really good. I use a larger size needle for mens socks...note they are in US sizes. I have a needle gauge
so easy to exchange between US and metric sizes. I have loads of needles which I inherited from my granny and mum, so I need to check on the needle sizes. I use 2.5mm needles, but I think Orkney uses 2.25mm. We have big feet (and/or fat ankles:o) in our family, so the larger size works well. I think I used even larger size needles initially, made socks good for wearing over other pairs and in wellies :D You should check your tension of-course, as with knitting anything.

    Good luck with your knitting!!

All these new fangled needles you can get now!
I've just purchased a mixed packet of cotton, 13 balls in all, in the most beautiful jewel like colours. I've never knitted/crochet with cotton before so that will be a new experience. Not to sure what to make but leaning towards a bag of some sort.

Having given my baby knitting patterns on loan to someone who denies I ever did so, I was desperate to find a baby boy knitted helmet pattern which I knitted some 33 years ago when my son was due!

Result! Having spent hours searching Ebay I have finally found the pattern I want and I have placed a bid. Subsequently have found two other sellers so have placed them on my watch list!

ViskB: That room is brilliant, you would just have to pack your knitting needles if you stayed there :T
Your knitted clock sounds very intriguing, can we have a peek?

grannybroon; I often find baby old patterns in charity shops. I hate it when people don't give back items that have been lent out.

I agree! It is particularly annoying when it is a member of your own family!
