Hi,
Does anyone know whether it is ok to take sock needles to Australia? I have heard that it is allowed now but dont want to take it if different airlines have a conflicting policy.
Has anyone encountered problems and if so, where?0 -

Thanks sunshine - I'm basically doing these again but with a ribbed edge instead of the picot one this time.

Orkney;; I used to make loads of those mittens when the children were small. In fact there is still a pair in the memory box in the loft with the owners name embroidered on it! Hope you feel better soon.
Sneezy That's a nice haul from your gran, have you decided what to knit yet?
Jan; Sorry I dont know if you can take Knitting needles in hand luggage. I have taken some sewing needles in my suitcase to Spain. Sorry not much help. Maybe email the airling you are flying with to see what their policy is.0 -

I had a similar question about needles on a flight to Crete. After conflicting advice, I made some DPNs out of bamboo BBQ skewers and started a sock on them. Just knit about 3 rounds then tucked them inside my ball of sock yarn and popped them in my handbag.
I figured the worst that could happen would be that they would take my needles. As they were just skewers and I hadn't knit much I took the risk and they sailed through security :j
As my flight was delayed, I knit in Departures (caused a lot of interest) then on the plane.
BTW - 2 pieces of advice.
Take your proper DPNs in hold luggage in case you lose the skewers.
Take a small piece of sandpaper or an emery board with you. No matter how much you sand your skewers, you'll find rough bits
Good luck, and enjoy your flightJack of all trades ... Master of none

I have about 15 royal blue 25/28g balls - I suspect that my Nana was doing a school jumper as that was the uniform colour when I was in primary school (over 15 years ago + there were bits of jumper already knitted).
And a few other bits too - need to go through it in the next couple of days to catalogue what I have (I'm writing it down so that I can keep track of the projects I have on the go/are in the pipeline)
Pennib - I know I'm very lucky - she said that i can have all her straight needles (its a shame but i can't use straights) and all her patterns - there should be hundreds somewhere! Not sure what i will do (as i only really started 6 months ago I'm still learning) will have a wonder on ravelry later and see what i can see!Using my phone to post - apologies in advance for any typos0 -

I frequently fly to Italy with hand luggage only and have been taking circular needles with me without a problem, can you do the magic loop? If you are planning on taking the needles in checked in luggage I am sure that will be fine.
