Mumof2, if using circs for straight knitting, when you get to the end of a row, switch the needle tips into the opposite hands just like you would with straight needles. They're brilliant for knitting blankets with because they can get heavy, get in the way and be a pain. With circs, the knitting just moves forward and back across the needles and keeps your lap warm :D

I've been knitting for 16 years and never got stuck with a pattern but this one has me flummoxed!

It's from the Rowan Purelife Winter Collection, and the pattern name is "Edenhall".

The sml size is started across 89 stitches and the pattern is laid out on a chart with 89 boxes - sound easy right? The thing is that a number of boxes contain the yfwd symbol - but ofc doing a yfwd isn't using up a stitch on my left needle so I complete the 89 boxes and have loads of stitches left. I thought "Ok np, just keep repeating" but that messes up the pattern.

I've checked the Rowan website incase there's an Errata for this pattern but there isn't.

Does anyone else have this book or know what i'm doing wrong? Advice please!!

when you yfwd do you then knit the next stitch? then the pattern says 'blah blah'? perhaps the instructions dont say to do so? its usual to yarn forward and knit the next stitch.
sorry it that sounds a bit impertinent - but I have come across patterns which assume you knit the next stitch but dont actually say so!

Not always. Somethimes its followed by (S1,K1,PSSO) or K2tog. The way they have set it out in 89 boxes for that size makes me think there is a mistake somewhere.

The first row (89 stitches) is:

*(s1,k1,psso),yfw,(s1,k2tog,psso),yfw,k2tog,yfw,k2tog,yfw,k1,yfw,(s1,k1,psso),yfw - then repeat from* and it's supposed to end with a k2tog but it doesn't.

Have you tried asking on ravelry? Loads of knitting pattern help on there. I wish I could help you but I'm still at the stage where I can't knit without the laptop open so I can google when I get lost :o

  • The yarn forward will give you an extra stitch, it will usually be accompanied by a decreasing stitch, such as k2tog, or sl 1, k1 pass slip stitch over, so the one should cancel the other out.

The bit of pattern you have written above will take 12 stitches to knit, and will leave you 12 stitches once you have knit it.

Hope that helps, I'm not very good at explaining it, so if it doesn't make sense, say, and I will try again LOL.

NualaBuala - a needle gauge is only a few pounds, see one here, and will be so useful. Its a must for dpns, as they never have a size on them! I inherited my mum's and both grans' needles, so my guide is an absolute must!! I use it most weeks, despite sorting the needles into size groups :D
I use these all the time. They only started printing the size on them recently, and you're right, they do wear off. You do need one of those cards with holes in to check the size, there are lots very cheap on ebay. It also helps when you want to make an American pattern as you can use it to find the equivalent metric size.
Thanks for the advice both of you! :A I will loosen the purse strings and get myself a gauge.

I have my eye on that Owls sweater too, it's beautiful. But it's not going to happen any time soon. I'm still working on my Sarah Lund The Killing sweater. I'd better hurry up as The Killing II is starting in a fortnight and I'll probably want whatever new jumper makes an appearance (I seem to be a tad obsessed)! :rotfl: I realise I've made the body too big but it'll have to do as I hate trying to fix things and I really don't want to reknit it! I'm planning on making another in the reverse colourway so I can attempt to get it right then. That's if I can ever face improvising a pattern again. The wool (Sirri 3 ply) is just gorgeous and smells of something lanoliny and sheepy. I keep picking it up and sniffing it - think I'm a little bit in love with it! :rotfl:

Kaz, just added you on Ravelry. I'm the same username there too in case anyone wants to add me as a friend. BTW, I did that when I knitted my first pair of socks - ended up inside out and I was so confused that I ripped back and started again!

Moo2moo, had to laugh at your description - I felt exactly the same working on 2.75mm DPNs with sock yarn! I felt certain I would do myself an injury with them. :rotfl: I couldn't wait to knit something chunky afterwards! I started over several times but suddenly it all became "normal" and gave me the nerve to tackle other things like circular needles. :D

Mikazaru - what a beautiful blanket - well done! (Doesn't matter that your Mum helped, bet she enjoyed helping you)
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

  • This looks like a stitch pattern called Diamond Mesh from the first Barbara Walker Treasury book, although I’ve not knitted it myself. I’m pushed for time at the moment, can get more information to you, but it may not be for a day or so – sorry can’t be sooner. In the meantime, I found this http://thewalkertreasury.wordpress.com/2007/06/17/diamond-mesh/, which looks like it in a very fine yarn. There’s chat about the sequencing being confusing, and the rows that cause the confusion are detailed by one poster. The row pattern repeat starts at a different point in the sequence to your pattern, but the overall stitch pattern looks the same. There is a download link from the site (to a video?) but I can’t vouch for this.
Hope what I’ve typed makes sense and hope this helps you sort it out by comparing what your pattern says with the online info. It’s a lovely sweater and worth the effort! Let me know if you need more info.
Barbara Walker books are great if anyone’s not come across them before.

I had a pattern that called for yfwd, I was doing it as a yarn over and ended up with extra stitches, what it actually wanted was bring the yarn to the front of the work under, rather than over the the needle, slip the next stich and then take the yarn back, again, under the tip of the needle, no extra stitch added, it gave a kind of ladder effect to the knitting.

I finished my sleeve last night :D. I also picked up the next sleeve and have done 3 repeats of the pattern. It'll be nice if I manage to finish this by the end of the month :)
