Thanks NualaBuala and Cuddles for your replies to my query on knitting socks. All your socks look great and I will look at that link you gave me for knitting instructions. I think I will knit a DK pair for my first attempt. My grandaughter is 9 but is a ladies size 5 shoe so it will be ladies size for her. She can wear the thicker DK ones under her boots in the winter - that is if I can get them finished in time! Is it easy enough to find a pattern for DK if the thiner sock wool is more normally used? I have a Lidl store fairly near so will keep a look out for their next sale of sock wool.

    Hi
Bought some sock wool too today from my fave wool shop at Ollerton and was given a free pattern with it. The wool is Opal 4ply sock wool and is lovely self patterning stuff.
I am only on round five and am just getting to grips with holding the needles comfortably but I think I am becoming addicted as I can't wait to see what the next colour will look like.:D
I now have 2 scarves and a cardigan which are nearly finished but I don't want to finish those now I have plucked up the courage to try these :D
Thanks for the link to Silvers Orkney star.:A

i bought a sock making pack with the self pattern wool in it but not even taken out of packet yet as i just cant get the idea o holdng so many needles, do you have any tips now that you have just got started?
  • homealone - you can knit socks on two needles, and sew up the seams at the end. I've knitted them years ago, but don't have a pattern now. I'm sure you could G**gle "knitting socks 2 needles" or suchlike and find instructions.

    Good luck!

The stitch just seems to be purl two rows and then knit two rows. Knit a tension square to see if your yarn is suitable.

Here is one homealone - it's American, so you'd have to convert needle size etc.

    Hi Homealone,
I used the tutorial that everyone raves about on here and also a book I borrowed form the library called knitting on circular needles I think. I had both of those on my knee, no kids, no telly, no husband so no-one to annoy me!
It feels really strange at first and I found it hard to cast on loosely enough so used a normal 4 mm needle and then transferred them across. Once you have knitted a couple of rounds you can then just focus on the 2 needles you are working on and let the others just hang, the stitches don't fall off, which I thought they might. I have made mistakes in the rib and I kept having 21 stitches on one needle and realized I must have made one somewhere so I just knitted 2 together.

I figure that these are my learning pair and if I ever get as far as turning a heel I won't care about making a few mistakes at the top of one sock seeing as I will be wearing them:D

It might be sideways knitted. In which case be extra careful with tension (as I know to my cost!)
