I am looking for some very basic help as to how to knit one of the curly scarves which are all the rage just now. Thank you.:rotfl:
Do you mean the ones that look like a spiral when they are finished? If so, they are very simple indeed.
Cast on your required number of stitches for the length of the scarf. I usually do this by guesswork, cast on say 120 stitches, then pull them off the needle and see how long they will be, and then either add or subtract as necessary. So, cast on your, say, 120 stitches. Row 1: Knit, then purl into each stitch til end of row.
Row 2: Knit
Repeat until it is as wide as you want, maybe six rows altogether as they are quite skinny scarves, then cast off - simple and very effective!Light Bulb Moment: October 2011

I'm just being curious - does everyone have a yarn/knitting budget or is it just me? I try to set aside £20/month for "crafts" (knitting, sewing, crochet, candle making, etc) and I also set aside £10/month for my pattern magazine subscriptions (Verena, Interweave Knits, Vogue Knitting/Designer Knitting, The Knitter).
I don't spend it every month - I generally save my money up to go to the Shows - but it means I have something there when I need it.
ETA: I have a "Sanity Fund" of £60/month, which has to cover clothes, books, music, crafts, etc. All the things you think "I wish I had some money set aside for that", but never do. At one point, I used it to save for a second-hand piano. For a couple of years, I saved £10/month towards an iPhone."Be the type of woman that when you get out of bed in the morning, the devil says 'Oh crap. She's up.'
It ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it - that’s what gets results!

My entire 'pocket money' is about £10 per month:o - and sometimes that's stretching it.
However, if you're trying to live within a budget - large or small - then I think it's sensible to know how much you're spending, and are prepared to spend, on any given area.0 -
I don't have a budget set up at present because I bought my yarn and knit pro needles with my birthday money. I think that if I do start to get more knitting done then I will have a look at setting up a budget then.
I'm trying to start my Manu today but dear lord above, provisional cast on is a pig to do. I will take my yarn to work tonight and see if I can crack it but don't think I'll have the time or inclination to do so. Perhaps I'll be able to get one of the knitters at work to show me how to do it without me wanting to strangle someone with my needles! Currently struggling as DD is having one of her I hate the world and the world hates me days. DH and I have spent well over an hour talking to her and trying to explain that she needs to start growing up a little bit in order for us to not have to keep telling her what to do. She wants the freedom of a 20 year old and acts like a 2 year old. Driving me mental at the moment.

So, I have just wasted my entire tea break (the last hour) trying to do a provisional cast on and have spectacularly failed to achieve anything whatsoever.
I'm actually really, really angry now. I could happily just fling it all out of the window because I feel like I'm completely wasting my time.
Main issue is that the you tube tutorials all go too fast (I can't watch them at work unfortunately) for me and the written method makes no sense whatsoever to me.
Is there anyone out there who is not a natural knitter like me who could possibly point me to a link where I can see it spelled out in words of one sylable?
Please tell me that I will eventually get this so%^&*g technique or my sister has wasted £4ish on a pattern which I will never knit up.
Am so unbelievably peed off with myself right now because I can't follow the simplest instructionsDebt: 16/04/2007:TOTAL DEBT [strike]£92727.75[/strike] £49395.47:eek:   £43332.28 repaid 100.77% of £43000 target.MFiT T2: Debt [STRIKE]£52856.59[/STRIKE] £6316.14 £46540.45 repaid 101.17% of £46000 target.2013 Target: completely clear my [STRIKE]£6316.14[/STRIKE] £0 mortgage debt. £6316.14 100% repaid.0 -
Noooo! Don't throw it out the window!

Knitty seem to be my go-to site for tutorials. I follow written instructions better than videos. (They stay still!) I have just done provisional co for the first time. I was really cack-handed at first, but just kept going through the pictures. It takes a while to get to hold wool and needles to suit you. Good luck.0
