I've found a pattern for some leg warmers in the months Lets Knit magazine. The wool they suggest is 'Colinette Iona, Jewel',the details from their website is Statisticsspacer.gifkey_yarn_mix.gif75% wool, 15% silk, 15%kid mohairkey_tension.giftension 10 cm: 19 sts to 24 rowskey_weight.gifComes in 100g hankskey_lengtht.gif141 metres per hankkey_needles.gifneedles_4.5mm
The link to the wool is http://www.colinette.com/sess/utn;jsessionid=1547852508aafb3/shopdata/0020_yarns/0007_wools/0090_iona/product_details.shopscript?article=0060_Iona%2B-%2BJewel%2B%3D28IONA-54%3D29

Can anyone hazard a guess if this is chunky?? The pattern is knitted on 3 double pointed needles size 2.75mm changing to 3.75 and then back again.
Any ideas will be gratefully received,
These legwarmers are taking some getting started I hope they will be worth it
  • I remember my mother having a knitted cardigan with a collar (does anyone remember the Scotch Wool Shops?). She wore it for ages and then passed in on to me and after some long time I gave it to MIL who wore it on an almost daily basis as her house was very cold. I reckoned that the life of that cardigan was some 30 years and the only sign of age was to be found if you lifted the collar and could see where the colour had faded.

Has anyone else got similar tales of a long life knitted garment? Don't think you would get that from today's yarn - unless you know different?

    Bella

I remember my mother used to knit a jumper for herself (some perhaps were made before I was born!!!), she'd wear it for years and then when maybe say the elbows were getting a bit thin, she'd unpick it and cut out the thinning bits and then knit up again into a jumper for me and I'd then wear it for a few years!!!:rotfl:

If you follow the link to the colinette site - underneath the description of the Iona yarn it says that it's an 'Aran-type' yarn.

    HTH

'the legwarmers knitted on 3 double pointed needles' - I wonder why? seems unnecessarily complicated to me! Why can't they be knitted in rows on ordinary needles and then just sew up the seam

Aha Thanks for that, I'll have a look for Aran type,
Yes, I did think I could get in quite a muddle with 3 needles. Not being a very experienced knitter I just need a pattern to follow step by step giving me all the details, stitches etc. A friend at work said I could just do it on rows then sew up the seam but I'm not sure on the number of stitches to use..

Should be whatever the number of total number of stitches is on the 3 needles - or maybe add 1 (or 2) to allow for the sewing up of the seam.

Just a thought, that particular yarn though, is one of those 'random-colour dyed' ones, so an ordinary aran would perhaps look very plain in comparison.
  • Oooh - a knitting thread! I'm an avid knitter and have been for years. Didn't expect to find a thread for it on here though, what a nice suprise. Have vowed that I will not buy any stash this year or until current stash all used up. And as I have enough to keep me knitting until I die, going to be a long time before I'm buying anything.

  • Welcome scorpio04. Think you must be my sister. I have a stash that will last me to the grave as well.

I too have vowed not to buy more until it is all used up. I skated on thin ice today though as I had a look in my local wool shop at their Sale wool. Fortunately there wasn't anything that appealed so I came out with a clear conscience not having broken my vow. Don't think it was a very serious vow really, just an idea!!!

Quite a few of us on here are knitting squares to make blankets with our bits and pieces. I am doing a pink and white one and have done 15 squares and started joining them together. Five joined so far.

Please let us know what you are making. If you could post some pictures that would be even better. I don't think we are a very technological lot on here, too busy knitting I think.

    Cazarol,

Not sure if that wool is Aran thick as your post says that the needles used are 2.75 and 3.75mm...old 11 and 9, which would be far too fine for Aran weight wool...hang on I see 4.5mm mentioned as well which sounds about right....am I just being stupid here...well it is late and I am old!

Check it out before you buy...knitting on dp needles isn't really difficult once you get used to it, so good knitting

Not had time to read through all the pages, but does anyone have a good site they can recommend for getting started. Always wanted to learn but no-one to teach me.

Well I'm shocked to say the least. I went into a local charity shop a few days ago. We have 6 in the local shopping centre, but only one that sells wool, old patterns, needles etc. Asked if I could see their patterns (they always have a large bundle behind the counter), only to be told, that they've all been thrown out - about 400 of them:eek: . Goodness knows why. I know they've moved the counter in there and generally tidied things up, but still....

Anyway, back on to knitting. I'm doing a baby jacket in DK at the moment. It has a row of cabling up each side at the front. Only done cables once before and that was just a few panels on a scarf. I'm a little anxious about doing it on a jacket though, as my concentration isn't good, and I'm dreading getting to grips with decreasing the raglan, as well as having to keep the cable pattern going. How these people manage to do this with an all over aran knit, I'll never know:eek: . Hats off to anyone that can do that:T
