Hi everyone, glad I found this thread. I'm not a great knitter, but have found some wool in our local 'bargain' shop at 49p a ball - its a type of ribbon wool - if that makes sense? Different colours mixed in and a bit fluffy.

Anyway thought I would make a scarf - can anyone tell me what size needles I should be using? Would 6mm be around the right size? Any ideas please?

    Hope someone can advise.

Try 5mm to start with, these sorts of yarn usually work well on those - if you tend to knit very tightly then 5.5mm or 6mm might be better.

Cat, just checked my bands, they are either 5 or 6mm.
The bigger the needle, the looser the article will be, and as Seakay mentions, a lot will also depend upon how tightly you knit.

Oops, being impatient I started off with 6.5 mm needles so far it looks ok, I;m quite a loose knitter anyway (I think!). Thanks everyone for your help.

    Well done tooties,
I did buy some wool last week, it was the 3 for £1 stuff in wilkinsons, so I figured it was moneysaving.
But, I am still resisting the urge to buy the yarn for that wrap thingy. :D

In an attempt to be more organised about this wool malarky, I have got some large clear polythene bags and have put the balls of each sort into a bag and sealed it with sellotape. I have also got a large jar into which I am putting my needles, knitters corner is starting to look better. :o

hello again all and happy new year, sorry I have not popped in for a while but what with xmas and starting a new job I have been a bit busy... Anyway I wanted to say thanks to whoever it was (I forget now and am too lazy to try read back so far!) that posted the link for the knitting mag offer, 3 issues for £1, my 1st one arrived this week with free needles, and I love it, full of great patterns and tips... so thank you so much, whoever you are!
Hopefully I will try get back in soon, not go anything on the go again but I am eagerly scouring the wool shops to ease my itching to knit fingers! the only thing is.. if I am knitting I wont have time to come on here.. hmmmmm now theres a thing!

tooties. Well done! I think you must be a very quick knitter. You'll soon have caught me up with your sqaures at this rate.

SIL just phoned to say her daughter is expecting her second baby. To me this means knitting and possibly new wool, but this mum to be is a thoroughly modern miss and doesn't like knitted garments - what a shame. At least I'll be able to stick to my guns and not buy any wool.

    Keep up the good work,

    Bella.

Bella, what a shame. If you really have the urge, how about offering something very plain....maybe it's the baby colours she doesn't like, mint greens and lemon.

No, it's knitting in general she doesn't like, she thinks it's old fashioned. She thinks I'm old fashioned.

I KNOW I'm old fashioned and proud of it so take it for a compliment. It's going to be a summer baby anyway so won't need woolies much, so I won't waste my time.
