They don't really understand do they?! Mine thinks I'm being off with him when he's talking and I'm knitting....he usually wants to know the answer to something complicated too...
It's great to see that others are continuing to be productive....I seem to have completely stopped for now, but planning to get the knitting machine out to use up my stash on a blanket or two - DDs dolls pram needs some bedding, so I'll make a couple up for her too. Have tried knitting squares but for some reason can't really sit to them, but then again I can't seem to settle to anything at the moment

Hi Princesspoppypop.....can you post a piccie when done....I'm a bit addicted to scarves at the moment.
I also agree with Ishtar, it's never a question that you can answer yes or no to...Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0 -
Hi I have been reading this knitting board with interest so have come out of lurking mode!
I used to knit a lot when the kids were little, but now hardly do any apart from the odd g'childs cardi now and then. But now we are going to have a new baby in family will look at my old matinee patterns so those and this thread might get me started again! Trouble is I love doing cross stitch as well so it will be a bit of a tussle as too which I do.
There was a question posted quite a while back (page 2/3 I think)asking if anybody knew what to do about the problem with stocking stitch cardis and making the button band....but how do you solve the problem of it curling under? Nobody answered this so it was either overlooked or nobody knew either!! The only way that I have got around this problem is to have a pattern going down the edge so that stocking stitch is not next to the button band or a moss stitch band.
I hope somebody will be able to come up with an answer :0)
I hope nobody minds me butting in. I have been a knitter since I was 10yrs old and thats over 50 years ago. I haven't had a problem with front edges curling under and I can't understand why it is happening to you. I do use a flat stitch to sew the bands so perhaps thats the answer. My friend who is an expert calls it mattress stitch but I don't know if mine warrents a proper name. I just take a small stitch alternatively from each side starting at the bottom and working upwards and holding the garment in whatever way feels comfortable. When I am knitting the fronts including the bands I always slip the first stitch on a plain row taking the wool around the edge and back through the middle of the needles before knitting the second stitch. On the purl row I slip the first stitch as a plain row and bring the wool again round the edge to the front ready for the second stitch purlways. These 'bobbles' at the edges of each row are the bits I use to sew the item up. It looks neater because its firmer. I hope this is clear and helps a bit.Mortgage and Debt free but need to increase savings pot. :think:0 -

The scarf isnt a winter one and more of a fashion accessory. I bought the wool- 2 balls for £4.90 and needles £2.50 6.5mm and have decided to make one up as a mothers day gift. (I know Im starting early). My Mum has everything and more and I know she would really appreciate a handmade gift better than commercial rubbish. When its finished Im going to personalise it with some fancy buttons and wrap in in tissue and cellophane. Im halfway through, much to OH annoyance! Ahh yes! Do they do that to you as soon as you start to read, stitch or put headphones on too? Mine did
- with perfect timing:rolleyes:. Btw the Sirdar Firefly wool sounds rather nice!0 -
Hi Ches
Thank you for your reply. I always slip the first stitch of the row but havnt tried the extra bit that you do, I will give it a go on my next cardi. Thanks for the tip and taking the time to reply.
I also sew up with mattress stitch (although I didn't know it was called anything:rolleyes: )so I dont know where I have been going wrong, maybe it does need the firmer edge to stop it curling, I hope this is the answer!
I would like to knit one of those shetland shawls for the new baby but I have so many other hobbies I don't know if I would finish it as the wool is so fine, they look lovely tho......hmmm....maybe a double knitted one in lemon with a backing of lemon material and then held together with little knots of ribbon? (well I can see it in my head anyway if it will get any further I'll let you know ):rotfl:
I also have a fancy for a blue scarf and as my cross stitch Japanese lady is nearly finished I might give that a go.

Ches...that is exactly how I sew up my knitting and have rarely had problems with 'curling'...you explained it much more clearly than I would have done and I have a few more years knitting on you...around 58 I reckon!
Am busily knitting gloves again for DD4 as she lost the last ones I did....she is definitely getting elastic to connect them this time, 26 or not!
Happy knitting all

That sounds fabulous and and I would love to see a picture if you do get around to making it.
I cross stitch too but prefer to work 1 colour pictures such as silhouettes. I have a great book of silhouette patterns by Julie Hasler that I love. I always have one piece of knitting on the go though as I find it very theraputic. Currently its a jacket for me using Sirdars Boa yarn and its an absolute p...g to work with. The only way I can see if I am on a purl or plain row is by the tail of yarn where I cast on and is consequently taking me ages because I am not enjoying it. I have to confess my first love is paper crafting and everything else takes 2nd place. I was interested to read about the bamboo needles. I may have to invest in those.Mortgage and Debt free but need to increase savings pot. :think:0 -

I used to knit all my children jumpers when they were small. I wish sometimes that it wasn't so old fashioned for kids to wear hand knitted stuff but I suppose sweatshirt material does wash and wear better. My ex sil wouldn't let the GC wear hand knitted things because he had such a bad time himself when at school because his mum made him wear some peculiar jumpers. I did use to make my GD shrugs though as these seemed to be acceptable. I don't think they lasted through the WM and TD for long though. Funny you should mention gloves as I found a couple of glove patterns in the charity shop last week and am planning to make some for myself. Bet the GS's pinch them though.Mortgage and Debt free but need to increase savings pot. :think:0 -
Update on the Wilkinsons wool....
I was in store today and it is 99p per ball or 3 for £1.
This is for the Fancy yarn, eyelash sort of stuff.
I bought some Bobble as well, as that is also the Fancy brand....but that went through till at 99p per ball, I'm going back tomorrow to check the shelf edge ticket.
The free pattern is printed on the inside of the ball band....Using 8mm cast on 20 stitches and knit till all 3 balls are used.
Sounds like my sort of pattern.
Could be worth a look if you want some cheap pressies.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0 -

I will post a piccy but you might have to wait awhile I havn't bought the wool yet as I definately am going to finish my cross stitch lady first. I started a kiddies cardi while I was on my travels in the summer, the main body of which was in moss stitch so I could do it without looking, otherwise I get car sick  ,and I just need to finish the aran part of it off.
I admire your a gumption in making a jacket with boa yarn. I would have thrown it out of the window in frustration by now;) . How far are you along?
I have never used bamboo needles, all mine are very old some of them 40 years! Maybe its time I invested in some new ones:rotfl:
What sort of paper crafting do you do? Scrapbooking, cards? I have had a go at making cards with a friend who has ALL the stuff that you need. It can get very addicitive and I really enjoyed it But I have to zip my purse up, otherwise not very moneysaving:rotfl:0
