When you are doing cable the front is the front the back is the back to what side you are on at the moment, no Right side wrong side.0

thanks spider, the reason i ask is that i am going to be knitting a cardigan for my mum in the eyelash type yarn and am not sure whether i will be able to get away with buying just one cone in a 400g size or do i need 2 cones. i vant check on pattern like in the normal way as not working directly off one pattern as cant find one to fit the bill so it might have to be a mish mash of patterns
In that case I would try and work out the area of individual pattern bits. So if the sleeve pattern you are going to use is x cms long and y cms wide then it will be X times y size in area. As a sleeve is not usually oblong this will be a larger area than the knitted garment, but it will give you a rough idea. Then work out how much eyelash yarn you would need to knit a shape this size. Do this for each section of the garment.
I have also just looked in a book for you call one thousand and one sweaters. You can mix and match sleeves styles, necklines etc. For the body of a basic, square neck cardi, hip length in double wool it is suggesting about 800 metres for the front and back (including placket) this is at 22sts by 30 rows. For long sleeves about 500metres and short sleeves about 250 metres. Hope this helps.0 -
thanks for your help as always spider, i am going to order one cone 400g and hope for best. have also cast on a basic vest with some bobble wool that has been in my stash for years. have also cast on an aran jumper for ds1 that i originally started 6 years ago for xmas, will finish it this time
poor thing been very patient. also bought some cotton type wool off one of the sites suggested on here so have staarted a lovely cotton vest. so wont get bored also still have 2 blankets on the go in crochet. thought i would cast on a few so if i got bored of one would have the other, trouble is all in rib lol. son one is though plain ss as he chose different this time around so thats a good one to carry around as need to knit ss for 13 inches so will take that with me when going away for weekend. my big problem is that knitting sends me to sleep so am forever waking up with knitting unravelled so cant knit with that funky or bobbly wool at evening as have to un do whole thing as too difficult to pick up stitches. have 9 charity shops all on top of eachother where i am going for the weekend so am going to see if they have any wool as this hobby is getting very expensive...have a nice day everyone looks like its going to be a hot one!

Hi,
I need some 30 balls (25gr) of 2ply jumperweight Shetland wool for fairisle knitting in a myriad of colours so have to be the tiny balls. At £2.10 a ball it's going to be a rather expensive jacket.
As I'm down in the South I don't have access to mill shops or anything like that.
Can anybody suggest a good (i.e. cheap) online source please, or even a realistic substitution.0 -
OrkneyStar those socks are gooooorgeous
:):) I used to always have at least two pairs on the go but I've got into a real sock "meh" lately
and can't seem to decide what to knit.
Sometimes I think since I got into Ravelry there's just too much choice  and I'm useless if I'm given too many options - I just need to sit down with a ball of yarn and knit a sock.
Like the old days!!! :rotfl::rotfl:To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else - means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting.

Look on e-bay, look on ravelry ? £2.10 a ball is cheap for the yarn you mention, up here the Shetland stuff is more like £3.15/ball and we live in Orkney (just down the road from Shetland!). I now realise why traditional Orkney/Shetland knits can be so expensive! I suppose about £60 for the whole thing seems expensive but then you would have to pay that much, or more, to buy a jumper knitted in a similar yarn I think.
E-bay does have 2-ply yarn in cones, much cheaper, but it is not Shetland, and you would have to check the wool/acrylic/anything else content. Also a lot of that is cones and as you need lots of colours that might not be any use! You might find folk selling oddments but then you might not get enough/all the colours you need.Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

Thanks for your help. £2.10 is the cheapest I could find (from Jamiesons) so it looks as though I'll just have to bite the bullet. Ebay's a bit hit and miss - it's a nightmare trawling through all the ads, and I'm sure I won't find the number of colours or quantities I need - not to mention the postage.
Oh well, budget takes a nosedive, but I've been wanting to knit this garment for ever, and I suppose if it wears as well as other fairisle garments I've knitted/owned in the past I'll be sick of it before it ever gets worn out - so it could be said to be a bargain.:rotfl:0 -
First Regia ocean blues sock now finished, just have to make a brother for him, a sister for my red waffles (one sock done), finish sibling one of rivercats and make a brother as well! Phew, and also have a scarf on the go two, and two hibernating jumpers for DS! Also want to make some cotton wash cloths/sponge type things (this pattern: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/bath-puff-3).
