Well, I have almost finished Mario - pinned him all together last night and he is looking good if I do say so myself. I think my nephew will love him!

...and so I thought, as Mario was almost finished and I am making a real effort to finish each project before I start a new one, I would let myself start my first pair of socks!!

I absolutely hated the first few rows and by row 4 had decided this would be the first and only pair of socks I knitted!! It was just so fiddly with all those needles and trying to make sure the yarn was tight enough between needles etc... but then I got into the swing of it and quite enjoyed it. They are knitting up really quickly and providing the heel, etc isn't too fiddly I may even become a sock addict, lol!!

Will post pictures when they are finished.

Thank you everyone for the advice and the inspiration.

    A
    xx

Well done PepPop! Welcome to sockyworld. What method did you use? (I'm a 5 pins, cuff down girl).
    NJ

It's a four pin cuff down one. These ones I've just about finished the first one but I think I've made the foot too long, might need to frog it a little and adjust it. I'm definitely picking up your bad habits :rotfl: I cast on a cushion cover last night from a frogged Aran jumper that I never wear ... I never have more that one thing cast on a time :A :rotfl: :rotfl:

djp64 I made a throw using Sirdar Denim - ooh it was lovely until my cats ate it :(

OrkneyStar Love your hot water bottle cover. I bet it's really cosy. Beautiful cardy too.

pigpen I would tip the wardrobe. Could you maybe tip it and remove the back?

psso SABLE - love it :D

PepPop - love the top edging on the socks.

Lynseydee - re 4 ply cardigan for 3 year old. I had the same trouble when searching for plain 4 ply cardie for DIL. I think the charity shops are the best bet for this type of pattern. People used to use 4 ply a lot more in years gone by. Unfortunately the one I found for DIL starts at bust 32", so too big for you. Do you want just a plain cardie? I'll keep an eye out when I'm having a rummage.

Ayeshalush - well done on the socks. It soon becomes easier. I have just taken the current socks to Cornwall and back for "in the car knitting". So easy to carry.

It all depends on how much yarn is on each ball, what kind of yarn and the pattern. Some patterns will use up more wool, e.g. a cable pattern, long sleeved instead of short sleeved cardi and so on.

    - On your pattern it should show the size you are going to knit, size 14 (or probably 36 - 38).
    - It will then show you how many balls you will need. Say it is 8.
-So if each ball has 110 metres then you will need to buy 8 balls @ 110 each = 880 metres.
    - If you want to use a different wool from the pattern then choose the wool you want to use. Look at the amount of wool on the ball band. So if each ball has 140 metres then divide 880 by 140 = 6.28. So you will need 7 balls of wool.

You can always take the pattern into a wool shop and ask them to help you calculate the amount you need.

Hi NannyJanny, yes just a plain cardie is what I'm after. Will have another look on the net as have only just looked on Ravelry.

Please forgive me if this question has already been asked and answered. I did intend to read through all the pages when I first came across this thread but then saw that there were 256 of them!

I have just started knitting and am teaching myself with the help of some books, youtube videos and phone calls to my mother. I am really enjoying it but am finding it very expensive. I bought myself a pattern for a chunky bolero the other day and was all set to buy the wool but it worked out at about £40 in wool alone which was out of my budget. Are there any cheap wool shops that you could recommend online please?
  • I know exactly what you mean *rolls eyes* I costed out a sweater for me the other day and it was £90!!! If it's a pattern you could knit in a manmade fibre (sometimes it doesn't affect the outcome, other times it will affect the way the knitted fabric drapes and hangs) then you can probably bring the cost down a lot. There are LOTS of places online to buy cheaper yarn - put in the name of a budget brand and you'll get plenty to choose from. Or good ole Ebay :) What's the name/number of the pattern?
