I didn't know patterns had a number but now I see that mine is 9057 (Wool Freedom) if that means anything. The wool needed is" Twilleys Freedom Wool" (15 balls of the stuff!!!). My problem is that because I am new to this I don't know what can be safely substituted. Thanks for the link, Cuddles.

I have seen the Twilleys Freedom yarn, from memory it is quite a 'floppy wool'- I did knit a kids pattern and substituted with an acrylic yarn- came out ok but a good bit tighter than it was supposed to be I think.

  • From what I remember (not a lot these days!) Twilley's Freedom is actually pretty good pricewise for a 100% wool yarn. I've just had a quick scout about and most of the manmades are similarly priced. TBH I'm not sure you will get 15 balls of anything for much less ...Serenity by Wendy would knock about a fiver off the cost. Most online shops tell you the gauge the yarn should knit to. Pick another super chunky yarn with a similar gauge to the Freedom if you want to substitute a different brand - your gauge will prob differ a bit anyway and you can always alter your needle size to accommodate the difference. Hope you find a bargain and happy knitting :)

I agree with what other people have said. Freedom wools are lovely, you are getting a 100% wool bolero. I know what you mean about the cost though. How about a wool/acrylic mix. You would need to check tension on the ball band though. I have used Twilley's wool before, (the wool/alpaca one) but only because DIL requested two garments and chose the patterns. If I knit for loved ones I tend to use the correct wool, it was soft and floppy and lovely. Don't seem to spend that much on garments for myself though. Strange isn't it.

thanks spider, the reason i ask is that i am going to be knitting a cardigan for my mum in the eyelash type yarn and am not sure whether i will be able to get away with buying just one cone in a 400g size or do i need 2 cones. i vant check on pattern like in the normal way as not working directly off one pattern as cant find one to fit the bill so it might have to be a mish mash of patterns

Oops I have cast-on another pair of socks :o:o:o:o.
    Stash-busting!
Though I did buy some more Regia wool yesterday to cheer me up after a not so pleasant dentist appt (more the long term prediction not the actual time yesterday!).
    Hope all are well.

:D Your socks really are to die for Orkney :D

Hope the prognosis isn't too bad :( I am due to have oral surgery tomorrow afternoon
I am working my way up to attempting some socks at some point. Just cast on an Owl hat on circular needle.
Probably a silly question, but am I right in thinking that when doing cables on a circular, the back is WS and front is RS? :o As in C4B and C4F?:
