Thanks for that, Mandy Moo and Orkney Star. I had tried to search Ravelry but didn't know about the projects part. I will have a look now. My post might have sounded as if my daughter wanted the hat but she wants the hat for my grand-daughter to match the cardigan!!!! Then, I am going to try to do something for the Mum!0

Have you checked ebay?

Have just checked Ebay and there are five pages of Snowflake patterns. If your yarn is chunky it should knit to any chunky pattern, just adjust the tension by using a smaller or larger needle size

Morning all,
Well I am trying my hardest to knit this hat for my daughters doll
http://www.lovinghands.org.uk/superstretchyhat.pdf
But it just doesn't seem to be working
As I've said, my knitting skills are very basic .... could someone just confirm something for me please ........
It says to k2 and p2 ....... once I've done a row and changed hands, am I supposed to be knitting over the knit stitches and purling over the purl stitches ????
No matter what I try it just doesn't seem to look right.A creative mess is better than tidy idleness0 -

No matter what I try it just doesn't seem to look right.
When you turn your work to do the next row, you'll purl all the stitches that you knit on the first row (but from the side that's now facing you, they'll look like you purled them - i.e. a bump instead of a v) and you'll knit all the stitches that you purled on the first row (again, they'll look the opposite).
Assuming you're making the small size...
You've 50 stitches, so if you start with k2, you'll also finish with k2 (because you're working a repeat of 4 stitches - 48 is a multiple of 4, so the last two stitches will be the same as the first two stitches of the row). So on the second row, you'll have to start by purling those two stitches, then continue across with k2 p2. The last two stitches will be purled. Next row, start with k2, and so on.
The same is true of the large size, but the medium size has 60 stitches. As 60 *is* a multiple of 4, anyone making that size will start with a k2 on the second row instead.
Once you've learned to "read" your work, it will be a lot clearer. So forgive me if this is too basic for you (though I suppose it might help someone else anyway):
When you look at your knitting, each stitch will look like a little "v" or a little bump. Each of these is the result of the stitch below the one on your needle, and they are different depending on which way you worked into them on the next row. If you knit into a stitch, it will end up looking like a "v" on the side facing you, and like a bump on the other side (where the top loop of the stitch landed). If you purl into a stitch, it will look like a bump on the side facing you and like a v on the other side. All knitting is a combination of these two stitches (and sometimes more complex variations of them).
Your hat is all "ribbing", so you will have columns of "v"s and columns of bumps. There should not be any "v"s in the columns of bumps, or vice versa. It will all make sense when you've done a few rows :-)0 -

Searching on ravelry (under projects) would be a great idea!Dum Spiro Spero0 -
Thank you sooooo much blueberrypie, believe me your instructions are no-way too basic for me, it really is appreciated.
Think I need a break and put it away til tonight, can't concentrate at the mo, and unfortunately the housework awaits.
I suppose it doesn't help my head when I've had to sit for 2 nights teaching my 6 year old to knit .... the blind leading the blind ... lol.
Thanks once again, your instructions are printed off ready for tonight.
Maybe DD will have a hat for her doll by xmas after all.A creative mess is better than tidy idleness0 -
I almost had a psychic boyfriend but he left me before we met.0

They have some great projects on the anticraft site - as soon as I'm a good enough knitter I want to try the bat shawlNobody I'd rather be0 -
Does anyone use magic loop to knit socks or sleeves?
I use DPNs at the moment but find that I don't enjoy knitting these items because of the stress of trying not to pull stitches inbetween joins
Is it easier magic loop style?
I heard a rumour you can knit two socks at once!! Is this true!0
