Kinkine, what on earth is a gonk?!!!

    Good luck with your projects!

Candy, how big is the doll? The hat pattern for Innocent smoothie hats is very simple, and they're quite teeny?

My son asked me for similar this week, for his bear. Have done him / it hat, scarf & gloves, now just need to get in gear to knit a jumper & pants for a flipping teddy! As if my project list wasn't long enough!!!!

Hi hunnybeanz, sorry it took so long to get back to you! A gonk is a sort of (in this case knitted) mascot thingy. I've finished knitting it but there is no photo yet because I don't have any stuffing and at this precise moment am snowed in! That's a real shame, because that means that all I can do is sit in front of the real coal fire to keep warm - and keep knitting! :T

Am about to start this sock pattern and just wonder if I can substitute a circular needle for the dpn mentioned?

Oh the mention of a gonk has bought back some memories! Couldn't find a pic of a knitted one, but they were like this.

In the mid 60s I was 6 and in infant school, and our teacher Mrs Hughes decided we should all learn to knit - this was before the national curriculum, in the days when teachers were able to use common sense and discretion and tailor the lessons to the needs and abilities of the children in the class (if only it were so now!).

Well, we were all given needles and DK, taught the basics and given a very simple pattern for a gonk. It consisted of 4 ellipses which were then sewn together and stuffed to make a roundish body, simple arms and legs, stuck on felt eyes and a clump of wool hair on the top. I remember mine was red at the bottom and pale blue at the top, and we glued a felt belt round it when is was finished. I really wish now that I had kept it!

Anybody else have memories of them?
Oh dear, here we go again.

I am finally making use of my pom pom makers and have made by first pom pom ! My scarf is going to be so unique and much cheaper than the high street version at £22

I'm not sure how many pom poms I am going to make but certainly plenty so that I can wrap the scarf around to keep myself toasty warm. Does anyone have any ideas of how I can join the pom poms up to make them into a scarf ?

Regarding needles, I got all excited when I got my bamboo ones but then got even more excited going back to metal lol!
I think I prefer bamboo for sock knitting on dpn's but metal for two needle knitting.
No knitting done today- tired as did not sleep well and had to go out in snow today to get meds for cold :(.
    Keep warm everyone xx

I finally have a finished project to show! Some socks knit for my friend at work's daughter. She gave me the money for the wool and I did the knitting. Normally I say no to knitting requests, particularly socks as it's a lot of time and I'm a bit of a selfish knitter and if I'm spending so much time knitting something I want it for myself :o I agreed though as the daughter is lovely and my friend is retiring soon so it's not going to become a regular request. Also her daughter only has small feet so they didn't take too much work!!

The wool is XXL Trekking in Pink Vanilla socks weer 60 stitches on 2.5mm needles just plain old stockinette simplicity.

Hope no-one minds if I come on to ask a question. I have tried searcing the thread but didn't find what I wanted. I haven't done much knitting for years but would like to make this

    http://www.canadianliving.com/crafts/knitting/aran_pillow.php

I remember seeing something similar as a kit in John Lewis last year.

When I used to knit there used to be wool shops on every high street but no longer. Where do I buy wool and needles? I don't want to spend a huge amount as it's only a small project.

    TIA

Getting there, thank you. I might be able to tweak it ( to be exactly right for a picky 17 year old!!), I am a little rusty at altering patterns, but it was far better, and the other links previously, than anything I found!
