i am knitting a bit of a weird scarf as it is, you purl the purl row in the normal manner but on the knit row you knit 1 then make 1 and at end of row with last 3 stitches you knit 2together then knit 1. well as i am an knitter of old, am not very experienced, as self taught so thought i may just as well knit and purl without making these stitches as it seemed pointless adding a stitch only then to delete it. when scarf curled right up on itself i wondered how it would work doing it the right way so i tried and very strangely it seemed to knit up diagonally. anyway, hoping its right but digressing as usual. the pattern says 2 rows knit in grey 4 rows knit in pink as not huge gap at end decided not to cut and re-attach colours but to drag them up and is now with hoops alongside although not large hoops they are there all the same. watched video on here and it drags a single thread up along even when not needed straught away this then means at each end of pink line i have a strand of grey. how should i be doing this? am i doing it wrong?

Right, so that's another two "Add to Favourites" links - you do realise that I am going to have to live for at least 300 years to be able to achieve half the things I want to!

Hunnybeanz - you're lucky you can go to a group - I have to fit it round the family and often feel guilty sitting down to knit when I feel I should be domesticating. Luckily the feeling goes if I perservere!

Did anyone catch my earlier question about my tension square for the socks - I'm dying to get started but don't want to fluff it.
  • Kinkine, it's only by the grace of God that I've managed to get there without my youngest in tow! DH has had last 3 wednesday's off by some miracle. Usually, I take her with me and try and get her interested in the little knitting dolly whatsit!

My (almost) guilt free knit time is night-time. Bit of tell and some knitting with an endless supply of brews has me sorted.
Of course, I probably should be doing housey things then, but then again, I'd get bored!

Don't ask me how, but I was on Knitting Pattern Central looking for a knitted corsage pattern, and found this: http://podcasts.interweave.com/iwk/projects/sp07/lacy_thong.pdf

I am actually lost for words! :rotfl:

Each to their own I suppose but it is not the first project that springs to mind when looking for something to make! :rotfl::rotfl::A:A
ETA I got some great wool in charity shop today, along with a stitch holder, all for £1.50- see stash on ravelry (my whole stash is not on there but added this one to show you all!)

Hi Homealone, I think it would help if, when you get to the end of the row (even if you don't have to change colour) that you twist the loose thread over the working thread (if you know what I mean). That way it is sort of woven in and not left hanging in space. Hope this helps.

Thanks Apollinia, I like the snake one. I never twigged about draft and draught! I'll be able to rattle one up in no time now.

Hunnybeanz - any chance of a picture of your crazy jumper - sounds intriguing. I also find it time consuming trawling through the patterns - especially the ones without pictures.

On a technical note, I decided for the first time in my life to do a tension square for the socks. According to the pattern, 30sts x 42 rows of the 4ply wool provided on 2.5mm dpns should be 10cm square, but my square is 9cm long by 7cm wide. How do I correct it - do I go up a couple of sizes on the needles? Any help appreciated.

In case anyone is interested, I contacted the knitncaboodle company and they e-mailed straight back. Apparently I could either go up to 2.75mm and do it that way, or keep with the 2.5mm and do the next size up in the pattern. She says its only the width that matters in this case, because the length is actually determined by what length you want the sock to be. I'm going back to it tonight -can't wait!

    Hi there,

I really really want to start knitting but don't know where to start. I was on a tube in London recently and there was this rather good looking young man. Despite his rather hot looks the thing that I was most taken with was the rather amazing looking scarf he was knitting.

My mum tried to teach me to knit when I was a lass but I just remember it being a disaster - I somehow managed to end up with more stitches than I had started with so my knitting just got wider. It was discarded and never looked at again.

I have a very bad habit of popping into Primark and buying knitted bits and pieces. I know I probably won't be able to make stuff cheaper than them but it would be great to have a go at doing my own stuff.

Where do I start?! Can you recommend any online tutorials? What needles should I buy? Do I really need to buy a whole set? What should I knit first, how many balls of wool do I buy etc etc! I'm enthusiastic but ever so slightly baffled! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!
