    Help please!!!

I'm using Opal Memory sock yarn for the first time, but instead of looking like fairisle my socks are just patches and blobs of colour with no structure to the pattern at all . I'm using a basic pattern I have used many times before with Regia and Zigzag.

I notice that Opal usually comes with a free sock pattern - is this the key? Does the pattern only work out if you knit your socks a particular way? I can't think of any other reason mine are such a mess :( I didn't get the pattern with mine, but I'm happy to buy another ball to get it if this will make the difference, as it is lovely yarn apart from the splodges!

    Any ideas anyone? Please?

I have used Opal cotton and have a ball of Opal memory (not used)....the opal cotton came out in patches of pink/green/cream but not really a pattern ([STRIKE]I think 'cotton' is like memory but more cotton content[/STRIKE]).
Pic on ravelry if you want to see. I used a king kole pattern.
ETA This probably won't help as I think memory is supposed to stripe!

Well I have done back and one side of DS gilet, just other side to do then borders....pics on raverly if anyone interested.

Have taken a right notion for knitting again, so far in the past two weeks I have done 11 Rico Can Can scarves, one pair fisherman type thick socks, have the back of a jumper knitted for DGS, and cant be bothered with doing anything else so the housework is slipping- every free five mins the pins are going clickety-clack. Really pleased with the socks they were done in Sirdar Chunky Click, and have always shyed away from socks as everyone said 'oh my the heel is difficult etc' but seeing your pictures on here gave me the incentive to do some, (also knowing I could shout on here for help too) so thank you. If I can figure out how to upload pics on here I will let you all see them!.

Well done Suzybloo! You have been busy. I'm going to try and knit a pair of socks for my husband for Christmas. Any pointers on a first sock pattern anyone? I was all set to go and get sock wool yesterday but couldn't get to the shop.

I got a copy of Let's Knit during the week (£1 off in the Asda voucher book) and it had a kit for £10 which has yarn, dpns, stitch markers and a pattern. I know it's expensive but there is a £1 donation to a charity which supports ex-servicemen. The wool looked really good - I was drawn to it because it looked like camo gear and my husband would like that. If anyone is interested the kit is called OPS-SOX and the website is www.knitncaboodle.co.uk. I've never ordered from them before, so I cannot comment on their service.

Hi Kinkine I decided to do my first socks in chunky so I could gauge how easy it was to do the heel, pick up the instep stitches etc, and as I had been fretting over this part knew the quicker I got it done the more confident I would feel in doing finer ones. OH is getting these ones with new welllies for christmas! I used the Sirdar Click chunky wool and pattern, which was very easy to follow. now going to do a matching tammy!!!

Suzybloo, did the Click chunky pattern come on the wool band or was it an actual pattern? I think I'll try that first, but still order the kit because I've priced the grundl sock yarn on e-Bay and its about £6 plus postage, so for £10 plus £2.50 you get the yarn, pattern and all the bits, plus a donation to charity. Everyone's a winner!

Just to say, I have knitted socks in DK (on two needles) and sock wool (kinda 4 ply) and the thinner ones a such a better fit.
The lady in the wool shop suggested chunky is not such a good option as it is hard to get them fitted so well, especially on a smaller foot. I did get the sirdar crofter chunky hat pattern instead though!

Right, I've ordered the opx-sox kit and now can't wait for it to be delivered! I've got the dinner ready to go, the toilet is clean, house is tidy (erm, sort of!) and I'm going to sit down and KNIT! Woohoo!

Would agree with Orkney Star about being wider over the top of the foot but as OH wears two pairs of socks then the final thick socks, they are ideal for him. not so good for the washing 21 pairs of socks a week to wash! I bought the pattern which had 4 different types of socks, and does from kiddies upto mens boats!
