Am off work sick today, bad throat and head, tried to go back yesterday and teach but forgot just how much energy teaching requires and realise I should have had 2 days off :( Think I may just be able to do some of cardi as it is just stocking stitch.
Orkney star thanks for lovely patterns- took a hot water bottle to bed last night for first time in years and forgot how comforting it was so may just have to add that to my list of makes to do!

Lovely hats Keiss- I never thought to make hats with my crofter....no DK left now though but I might try a chunky one.
Did not know you had lived in Orkney!

I am knitting loads of Christmas presents this year - beanie hats and socks! Did a couple of beanies last year and they were a great hit! I am using mainly Sirdar Crofter for the hats this year..it knits up with a Fair Isle-look, without all the different balls of wool!! :D It's great fun as you are never quite sure what they will look like!

    Here's my latest pair:

I did make the pinkish one for me originally, but have decided I like the traditional hat with a decent rib and turnover, my SisIL will love it though!!

Right, off to get some walls and ceiling washed down before painting them this afternoon....busy, busy.

As to living in Orkney...I would move back there tomorrow (not sure if DH is that keen :D). My mother's family is from there and I lived there from the age of 2 to 7. We didn't move far though...just to Caithness, where my dad and sis still are, so I get up there once in a while.

I just love the big sky, the sea (soooo miss this!) and the pace of life. There was a time that DH said yes we would retire to Orkney...but now the time is geting closer (well another 15 years or so...if not more :(), he is having second thoughts. He is a Fifer, where it is even colder than Orkney...but we have lived in England since '82. so we have gone soft!!!

    Have a great day everyone.

Not really sure on this tbh but I wonder if diamonds would work better than rectanges....also needs to be a soft flowing knit as it might not fall ?
Sorry not to be much help!

Help needed please- just started another scarf pattern which reads cast on 24 stitches 6 rows garter stitch - easy
now bit I am unsure on is garter stitch 3 stitches, 16 stitches stocking stitch, 3 stitches knit. I can see that this is to make a border but does it mean knit the whole of the first row then k3 p16 k3 or does it mean k3 then k1 p1 for 16 then k3 ? Mother in law seems to think it means the first option but I obviously have little faith!

The second suggestion (k3 then k1 p1 for 16) would give you a rib pattern in the centre, not stocking stitch. Stocking stitch is "knit one row, purl one row", so it would be:

Row 1 (after the garter stitch section): k
    Row 2: k3, p16, k3
Repeat those two rows for however many rows you need.

  • Hello - Just wanted to introduce myself and say hi as I like to look in on here when I get the chance. I like to do a bit of knitting and I am just learning how to crochet at the moment.

Keiss 21 - I love that crofter wool - fab hats. I needed an excuse to buy some more of it and beanie hats would be great.

    Bye :)

In Kirkwall, '62 to '67, on Berstane Road, I had two years at Papdale Infant School. My dad worked in the Roads Dept for the council (which included the airstrips on all the islands, including those on beaches!!). Mum was a teacher at Stenness primary school, when she wasn't having my bro and baby sis. Most of my Mum's family are still round about Kirkwall, with one cousin in Dounby.

We had planned on popping over when we were staying with Dad in Caithness this summer, but DH had a nasty S&V bug, so DS2 and I spent more time sorting Dad's garden out!! One day we will make it back again...I have been known to pop over for the day from Gills, having a total of 4 hours in Kirkwall, but I usually manage to see a good dozen of the family! Dad always thinks I am mad when I do this!
:D Whereabouts are you OrkneyStar...on the mainland, or one of the islands? Oh I am getting home-sick again!!

I started with the Beanies for the Brave pattern, from Ravelry, then adapted it it for length and pin-size. If you search for Beanie in Ravelry, you get 145 pages, the Beanies for the Brave is part way down the first page. I went with the one DS2 fancied...as his was the first one I knitted...completely red, apart from 3 rows of black rib at the beginning - his college colours. I used thicker needles for him as he has a particularly big head! :rotfl:
