I have just knitted 2 spiral ones but using a different method to the one above and they were a doddle to do (must have been as I am a beginner!:o). The pattern is as follows
using 6mm needles and dk 100g ball cast on 15 stitches.
row 1 knit 2 turn work around and knit the same 2 stitches back.
row 2 k4 turn work and knit same 4 back.
row 3 k6 turn work and knit same 6 back.
    row 4 knit whole row.

you carry on like this until the scarf measures the length you want or you get fed up of having to stand up every so often to let it untwiddle!

I think it looks best using patterned wool.
    Good luck and hth

That sounds very interesting. I don't suppose you have a picture or link to this pattern? I am very tempted to make one of these.

Hi everyone, hope it's ok to pop my head in ;)

I've literally just started knitting, last weekend I decided I should learn, so I bought a "learn to knit this scarf" set and got going... Claw hands later, I have a pretty serviceable scarf :D

Ok, so it's only garter stitch, but I'm remarkably proud of myself :T

And, in a slight fit of ambition, I've just cast on a new scarf in eyelash yarn... Someone tell me I'm not utterly crazy to try and knit with this for my second ever project :rotfl:
    Nobody I'd rather be ;)

Ooooh, I'd find that really hard using two different sized needles too!

What a shame your burnt it! Was it repairable?

I don't think I could have worn it again just in case the yarn gave way. The pattern did have big holes in it, I don't think I could have disguised an even bigger one :rotfl:

My big teddy ended up wearing it. It probably still is if it's still at my mum's.
    Did owe £9,951.96

Now helping hubby pay off loan. Finally paid off :j

Aweeeeee bet teddy looks cute - lol

Well, I started the scarf again using 10mm this time and found the a lot easier even though it's only 2 sizes less.

Does anyone have any ideas where I can get reasonably priced or cheap big wools and super chunkies on the internet at the moment? The kind that need size 10mm plus needles. I'm looking to do a massive cable blanket for someone's Christmas present but I feel completely lost when I start searching the net for wool. It's like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

Do any of you have any favourite shopping places?

sorry to jump on here, but, i have a scarf i am supposed to be knitting that uses three strands of wool at the same time and only requires 9 stitches. problem is its supposed to be done on size 25mm needles. feels like i am trying to juggle two trees.noticed your size 10 mm and wondered if you had any tips or advice on how to knit with big needles, please
