The next row is where my problem lies

    Row 5 K2tog, *yfwd, yrn, p2tog, k1, rep from * to last 2 sts, p2 [36] sts (no 35)

K2tog - you have one less stitch
yfwd, yrn, p2tog, k1 - this makes no difference to the stitch count - the yrn and the p2tog cancel one another out
p2 - obviously makes no difference to the stitch count

There are two places I think I would look at to see if I could spot the problem. The first is the repeated part of the pattern. My suggestion is that you start the row again, and make sure that you have three stitches for each repeat. Use stitch-markers every three stitches if necessary. The second place I think might be the problem is the last bit - the p2. It sounds very simple, and it is, but I wonder if somehow your brain or your fingers are mis-reading that as p2tog to match the k2tog at the beginning of the row.

Please can someone advise about sewing up knitted items?

I have been oversewing the edges with right sides together, but have been told that my seams are too thick.
Any advice appreciated as I'm just teaching myself to do simple baby / toddler knits for my grandchildren.

Try and lay the pices side by side cuddles- press them first with a damp cloth and cool iron. Lay side by side flat with right side upwards facing you, and very carefully just join the two so that the join is invisible, thats how I do it. With the right side facing you then you can see what you're doing and if any stitches are visible then you can unpick that stitch and sort it .Only hook the very last stitch into the join.

There are several techniques for joining pieces of knitting, and which technique is the right one to use depends on whether the join is vertical or horizontal, whether it needs to take any stress (e.g. a shoulder seam), and your own personal preferences. A good place to start would be the knittinghelp.com site - there are a few videos under "Finishing" at http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/knitting-tips - and there are also lots of good tips and links in threads on the Ravelry forums. Hi Lynseydee,
Sorry to butt in, I've been lurking as I tend to sew in summer and knit in winter.
As long as you are starting this row with 37 stitches the pattern will give you 36 at the end. The only change is the first k2tog

    So, k2 together -1
All the yrn, p2 together and k1s 0 change
    P2 0 change

At a guess, you're either missing a yrn or reading the last bit as p2tog?

Have another go and let us know how you get on!

Thank you both so much. I think you have both hit the nail on the head and I may have been purling the last 2 stitches together at the end.

That'll teach me to stay up and knit so late :rotfl:

Once again thanks, I can now get on and finish it and add another item to my collection of knits for me :j

  • Not sure I can class myself as a "knitter" yet as I am only just knitting my first cardigan. I've just got one sleeve left to do and the rims. Although how I do all that and put it all together I have no idea. I used the internet to teach myself to knit so I'm in no doubt I will find the answer here.

We are doing a school fundraiser at Christmas and I would like to knit some xmas decorations - has anyone got any ideas/patterns I could use?

Ravelry is awesome. I spend so much nosing around there that I have no time to knit :) I am currently teaching myself spinning with a drop spindle. I think it takes TIME. lol!!

    Morning Ladies (and gentlemen?),

I'm trying to take up knitting as I've been a cross-stitcher for many years. So I bought this kit:
    skinny3-th.jpg
But I'm really struggling with the pattern, as it just seems to add stitches, rather than keep them the same number after I've completed four rows of pattern.

    The pattern goes like this:

    Cast on 21 stitches.
Row 1: K1, *Yarn Forward, K3, Yarn Forward, K1, rep from * to end.
    Row 2: Purl
(I can keep the number of stitches at 21 after the above two rows.)
Row 3: K2, Slip One Knitways, Knit 2 together, Pass Slipped Stitch Over, *K3, Slip One Knitways, Knit 2 together, Pass Slipped Stitch Over, rep from * to last two stitches, K2.
    Row 4: Purl

After completing Row 3, I've ended up with 25 stitches on my needle and the pattern doesn't look even?

It's got my mum stumped, she can't figure out why it's not working, as this rate I'm going to have a very big triangle.

    Any suggestions?
(I'm a very beginner, so please go gently with me. :o)
