i have looked through the various stash of wool i have buried in many places and it all seems to be either a basic run of the mill dk or the fashion stuff we all made scarves from or the wool from poundland the velvety one thick, cant think whats its called. but the problem is none of it ever seems to match up to the pattern i have in mind and on the odd time when i have used the basic dk it never looks as good. it must be me when i see a pattern i like it always involves wool that is going to cost me at least £20. which i cant afford. am not a very experienced knitter but would love to knit one of the vest type tops i have seen on here but worried will end up with it looking like a cheap version of the original. how does everyone get there stash of lovely wool at a reasonable price... am i looking in wrong place????

Hi I also have a stash of wool and mainly d.k I couldn't believe the amount and felt embarrased as I had forgotton about a lot of it to be honest. I did sit and sort out a lot which was left over from different patterns and took it and patterns I no longer use to our local charity shop(Cancer research) and also the BHeart foundation and they took them all okay. I see little blankets crocheted and knitted for sale in pastel colours in a lot of charity shops so maybe the volunteers make them and sell them for the charity, or else other people buy the wool and patterns. Either way it is good that they are of use for good causes. I need to be very strict now with myself and not buy any more. Why is wool so addictive to buy? :) I am currently knitting with the gorgeous wool I got free as I mentioned in an earlier post, as a free gift for subscribing to Lets Knit. It is a lovely wrap and it will make a nice gift for someone in the family, for Christmas. I am wondering what to knit next as I am nearly finished so will hunt through my stash at the weekend. I dread my dh seeing it all as he will think I have gone mad:)

Ive recently taken an interest in knitting and have enjoyed buying the knitting magazines and looking at patterns - I haven't knitted since my daughters were babies and they're now 20 and 22!

I never used to bother with tension squares but I thought I would do it all properly this time. Im finding that my tension squares are always smaller than they should be and therefore will need to use a bigger needle. This surprises me because I don't feel as though Im knitting particularly tightly and if I knitted more loosely surely the knitting wouldn't be as neat?

I was wondering how other people knit - tight or loose?

I tend to be little on the loose side, but it's never been much of a problem, especially when I'm making stuff for kids.

Hi I used to knit rather tight many years ago, and now just right and I believe it was because I was under a lot of stress back then, and am more relaxed these days. I must admit I have never knit a tension square :)

  • I tend to knit tight. However I find that the tension gets better as I knit for a few minutes and become more relaxed.

I think tension square is useful if you are knitting an important item perhaps for an adult
