I've never done a tension square - is this something you would recommend? What difference does it make? Is it that if I knit tight I use bigger needles, or if loose smaller needles?

Sorry, my inexperience is showing isn't it!

Shazrobo, glad to hear that the wool knits up lovely; let's hope it's forgiving of my errors lol!
yes, its just to make sure the jumper comes out the right size, like you said, if its tight, bigger needles, too loose, smaller needles.

    A little help please...
I have found a free pattern for really cute bootees which I thought could be my first project, they are modern and easy. But.....they suggest a sport weight yarn, and the one they used is a 55% cashmere!!! no profit there, so what can I use instead?
Hi, sorry, I'm not going to be a huge help here, as I'm a bit out of the loop and haven't looked at wools for a while.

But, from memory, I think the 'sports' weight is one they use in the US....So, if you check what weight to how many metres are in a 'sports' weight balls (you should find this info easily enough on ebay), then check the UK weights/lengths for DK, Aran etc....and pick the UK one that's closest to the sports weight.

Hope that makes sense. I have a feeling that 'sports' is somewhere between DK and aran....But really can't remember for sure.

Annie021063 -Sport weight is like 4 ply. See here for wool/needle conversions from USA -UK.

Well this is why I shouldn't take the kids shopping with me; went to the Wool Shop in town today, got all the lovely wool I need to start making a jumper for OH, and left the book in the shop! Have managed to find the gauge instructions on a craft site but otherwise will have to wait til tomorrow to go back and get it...awww!
I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick @ss.... and I'm all out of bubblegum.

Redballoon....I would advise tension squares.....'thin' wool try 3 or 3.25, thicker 4 or 4.5 and thicker yet 5 or 5.5....you can then compare the number or stitches to cm or inch....you can rip squares or save to sew together into blankets

    HTH

The numbers refer to needle sizes....forgot that you wouldn't necessarily know what I was thinking....squares are usually around 10cm or 4 ins.

Can I ask - I have always used metal knitting needles but I was wondering what difference it makes using bamboo ones. I am knitting these gloves at the moment

and have had to give myself a break after the first glove as I have blisters on my finger and thumb :o. I was wondering if I used wooden needles would this help?

PepPop - they are beautiful gloves. I can vouch for wooden needles. I have tendonitis in both my hands and, when I changed to wooden needles, I couldn't believe how much better they were. I would definitely recommend them, whether people have problems with their hands or not.
