Hi, I've not been knitting for very long, I started on the Smoothie hats and then did some christmas characters from a book of my mothers, and I've been doing teddies from a Sidar blanket book.

My boyfriends best friend has just had a baby girl, so I'm looking for a pattern for something like booties that's not too hard for me (I'd like her to have them sooner rather than later!).

Anyone have any ideas? I downloaded one from flikr and I'm already confused. It says:

With MC (main colour) co 31 (35) sts.

why say 31 and then 35 in brackets? Which is it? Also, it says i need to knit into the back and the front of a stitch and I'm not sure how to do that. Am I in over my head?

CO 31 (35) means you cast on 31 stitches if you're doing the smaller size, 35 if you're doing the larger size.

To knit into the back of a stitch, you put the needle in your right-hand through the stitch to be knitted, but you put it through in the opposite direction from usual - from the back of the stitch to the front (imagining the stitch as "facing" the point of the needle it's on) - then just knit as usual (yarn around needle, pull needle back out of stitch, pull stitch off left needle). To knit into the back and the front, do as I just described, but don't pull the stitch off the left needle - instead, put the right needle through the stitch from back to front (as for knitting an ordinary stitch), then yarn around needle etc. You'll find that this results in two stitches being made from the one.

twirlypinky - there are some really good tutorial vids on knittinghelp.com

http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/increases scroll down until you see the one for kfb

these might help if you are a more "visual" person -I find it helps to know what I'm aiming for and like demo + written instructions - and then still have questions :o !

I like the jaunty angle of the beret! :D
  • I am knitting scarves for Christmas presents (using wool I already have) and I am working on one in garter stich, just plain knitting. The problem I have is the edges are a bit "bumpy". I am not losing stiches at all, it's just not as even as I would like at the sides. Any ideas?
