I usually buy wool on line using this website:
http://www.cpu-enterprises.com/.
If you search under Sytlecraft, Double Knit and their Special DK there are loads of colours at £1.20 a ball. It goes a very long way and there are loads of colours. Delivery is £2.50 for any quantity so it pays to buy in bulk.
Locally I use the Rainham Sewing Centre at the top of Station Road. She generally has a good range for £1.20 ish a ball.0 -
Hi, I've just finished doing a hat and mittens for my grandson and for the life in me I can't remember how to do a pom pom! I tried doing one last night and it fell apart! I remember doing 2 cardboard circles with a cut out - but how big is the cut out circle? Do you wind it round tightly or loosely till the cut out is full and if I want it to be a mixture of colours, do I add sections or what? How do you make it not fall apart?

Two cardboard circles with a hole, wind round and round and then tie it off between the two bits of card really tightly. Remove card and trim.0 -
Thanks catwoman, how big should the middle hole be?"It is always the best policy to speak the truth-unless, of course, you are an exceptionally good liar." - Jerome K Jerome0

Thanks catwoman, how big should the middle hole be?
About half the size of the outer circle. the size of the pom pom will be the size of the cardboard left. You can buy pom pom making kits on the internet.

If you want a pompom to be different colours, then there's lots of ways you can do it. What I normally do is cut two really long lengths of wool, one in each colour, thread them through a big needle and then use that. That'll give you a 'dotty' kind of mixed effect. Or you can do one 'round' of one colour and one 'round' of the next, which will give you a stripy effect. Or you can even do half and half, or quarters.
I maka a lot of pompoms for the innocent smoothie hats and probably the best investment I made was buying a set of pompom rings from the sewing shop. They were only cheap (less than £2) but they make it so much easier, and so much less faff than cutting rings out. They're less bendy than card too and again, it makes it easier.0 -
Thanks Catwoman, I'm having a look on the site. Will have a look in the sewing shop too next time I come into Rainham. £1.20 doesnt sound bad at all.0

Ive just been redirected to this "thread" (!) and am so glad - Im hoping someone can help me! I am knitting dolls at the moment which specify using Rowan Cotton Glace. This seems to be hard to get, and quite expensive and I wondered if anyone could recommend an alternative? The wool is quite fine, but slightly shiny and soft...as you can see I am a very technical knitter!!! Thanks for any help you can give!Feel free to thank me, it makes my toes tingle and my ears go warm :T0

May I suggest James C Brett Kool Kotton DK - available here http://www.cpu-enterprises.com/ £1.05 for 50g. Just done a wiastcoat in it and its great, its also machine washable and goes a very long way as its lighter than 100% cotton.0
